Fixe

Fixe
Pourquoi
Ce regard fixe
L'esprit au garde à vous
Pour qui courir le risque
de marcher aux genoux

Mes rêves que l'on confisque
Nos dieux qu'ils jettent au clou
L'odieux chant du phœnix
Qui nous prend tout

J'ai subi le supplice
Du baiser sur la joue
Faut-il boire le calice
Jusqu'au bout...

Rien
Ne vaut le prix d'un homme
Ne tisse pas ta couronne
dans le fil qui nous tient

Fixe
Pourquoi ce regard fixe
L'esprit sans garde fou
On se perd dans les rixes
Des règles que l'on fixe

Soldats de père en fils
Sans cesse au garde à vous
Sous le joug des milices
Jusqu'au bout

Rien
Ne vaut le prix d'un homme
Ne tisse pas ta couronne
dans le fil qui nous tient

Nous sommes fragiles
Nous sommes l'argile
Nous sommes un avenir incertain

Nous sommes utiles
Nous sommes futiles
Nous sommes le destin entre nos mains

Fixe
Nous sommes les cieux fragiles
Nous sommes les dieux d'argile
Esclaves de père en fils
Des règles que l'on
Fixe
Nous sommes les jours utiles
Nous sommes les nuits futiles
Nous tenons le destin
Entre nos mains

Set

Set(1)
Why
This set gaze(2)
Staying alert
For whom you might
Make crawl(3)

My confiscated dreams
Our imprisoned gods
The horrible song of the phoenix
That takes hold of all of us

I was tortured
By Judas' kiss(4)
Must we resign ourselves to suffering(5)
To the end…

Nothing
Is as valuable as a man
Don’t tangle your crown
In the cord that binds us(6)

Set
Why this set gaze
Our minds vulnerable(7)
We lose ourselves in the brawls
Of the rules that are set

From father to son we are soldiers
Constantly standing at attention
Under the yoke of the militia
To the end

Nothing
Is as valuable as a man
Don’t tangle your crown
In the cord that binds us

We are fragile
We are made of clay
We are an uncertain future

We are useful
We are insignificant
We are the fate resting in our hands

Set
We are the fragile heavens
We are the gods made of clay
From father to son we are slaves
To the rules that are
Set
We are the useful days
We are the insignificant nights
We hold fate
In our hands

1. The word "fixe" can be an adjective meaning steady, but can also mean "set/put into place". I was going to use steady at first, but after going through the rest of the song I realised "fixe" was supposed to be referenced in a different way, referring to the rules that are "fixed" or set up by (in this case) the military.

2. A "regard fixe" is like a gaze, but in this case I added the word "set", sort of as a synonymn for "steady" or "determined", because the "fixe" had a double meaning here in French that was a bit awkward in English, but "set" was the best word I could think of that would work both ways in English, as I wanted to still keep that double meaning in the translation.

3. This sentence gave me a bit of trouble with the way it was structured, but I think it was referring to the soldier (or whoever it is speaking of) standing at attention, his mind alert, on the lookout for "enemies" that he could make walk on their knees ("crawl") (ie, make them suffer, hold them hostage, etc). I could be wrong on this, feel free to correct me, this was just the sense that I got from it.

4. The kiss on the cheek is sometimes referred to as "le baiser de Judas", Judas being the disciple who betrayed Jesus Christ. So, I'm assuming in this context it's indicating the person was betrayed in some way. Although the phrase in the song is "baiser sur la joue" (the kiss on the cheek), that sense is (as far as I know) fairly meaningless in English, so I used the phrase "Judas' kiss" instead, as I felt that better captured the interpreted meaning.

5. "Boire le calice" means to resign oneself, to suffer through the things one can't change

6. "Tenir" can mean to hold, to grasp, etc, and in this case I felt the "fil qui nous tient" was referring to the way the men/soldiers/whoever were connected by the bond that they had from everything they went through, so I translated "tenir" as "bind". Of course this is just my interpretation, I don't know if it could have another meaning.

7. a "garde rou" is a guardrail, a barrier to prevent crashing, like a sort of protection. It looked like this was basically saying their minds were without protection (as in, they easily succumbed to whatever they were told to do), so I decided to translate it as "vulnerable" to make it more clear (again this is mainly my interpretation, I don't know if it could be taken another way)

On a side note, I listened to this song and absolutely adored it (: It's very beautiful, and the lyrics are powerful.
