Hey, you Bird

Makedonština

Oj, ti pile (Ој, ти пиле)

Hey, you Bird

Hey, you bird, nightingale bird,
Come, sing me a song,
One sad song.

Let it be heard afar,
Afar over the Vardar,
Over the Vardar up to the Veles region.

From the Veles region to the Prilep region,
From the Prilep region to Krushevo region,
From the Krushevo region – Mechkin Kamen

From the Krushevo region – Mechkin Kamen
There is the famous hero,
Famous hero Pitu Guli,
Pitu Guli the leader!

Author's comment:

- The song lists various places and landmarks in the republic of Macedonia, the point being that the nightingale's song should be heard far and wide.

- Like many Macedonian folk songs, there's a reference to a historical figure, Pitu Guli. He died at Meckin Kamen, near Krusevo, in the Ilinden uprising. He is a significant figure to both Bulgarians and Macedonians, and is mentioned in the Macedonian national anthem.

- A 'vojvoda' is a bit more than a leader, more of a great revolutionary hero.

- I used Anglicised romanisation rather than proper Macedonian romanisation (Latinica) in the place names in my translation to give an easier feel for the pronunciation to those not familiar with how ž,č,š are pronounced.
