Author's comment:

These verses are from a long ballad which talks about the Rosensfoal, a magnificent horse which belongs to a young and beautiful lady. When the lady travels to the other shore of a great fjord (presumably by getting married) the horse breaks free of all restraints in an attempt to follow her, even leaping into the water and swimming for fifteen miles before finally arriving at her new home. The lady receives the faithful animal with joy only to despair at his death on the following morning, as the horse dies from overexertion.
