If the switches are all in the off positions, you do know that the lightbulb is off, right?
Anyway, I guess it has something to do with the heat of the lightbulb. You turn all switches to on and then you wait until the lightbulb should be hot. Then you turn off the first switch, wait for another five minutes, turn of the second switch, wait for another five minutes, turn off the third switch and enter immediately. If the first switch turned off the lightbulb, it should be cold. If the second switch turned it off, it should be medium hot. If the third switch turned if off, it should still be very hot.
(doesn't work with low-energy light bulbs though)
It's not exactly the same idea but quite similar. Indeed, you don't have to turn off the third switch - you might as well just enter and look of the lightbulb is still on. That was quite stupid of me.
