Við sátum saman í skólastofu.
Ég dáði þig en þú tókst ekki eftir mér,

Þú varst alltaf best í dönsku,
það fyllti hinar stelpurnar vonsku,

'There is a baker living in Nørregade.2
He bakes kringles and christmas cake.3
He bakes big ones, he bakes small ones,
He bakes some with sugar on them.
And in his windows there are sugared cases
and horses, pigs and gingerbread,4
and if you have money than you can have some,
But if you have none then you can go.'
 
And then many years later,
both our ways led
to foreign countries where we went to university
we practised singing and together we hosted a concert.
And one starry-bright evening,
I knelt, oh, how tender was your hand,
you said, 'yes,' kissed me and now we are married
and we have a small Gunna and a small Jón.5
But, I will never forget,
how beautifully you sang, you sang:

  • 1. Danish is taught in primary- and elementary schools in Iceland for four years.
  • 2. Nørregade (Northern street) is a street in Copenhagen.
  • 3. A kringle is a type of Scandinavian pastry, similar to pretzels in Denmark but varies between countries. In Iceland it is doughnut-shaped and spiced with cumin. Christmas cakes are also Danish traditionally but enjoy great popularity in Iceland. They are yellow-golden breads containing raisins.
  • 4. Gingerbread is very common in Iceland, especially around Christmas. The biscuits are not always man-shaped but can take all sorts of forms, in this case the biscuits are shaped like horses or piglets.
  • 5. Gunna (female) and Jón (male) are names commonly used as typical children names, especially in folk tales. This does not mean that their children are named Gunna and Jón but simply that they have a girl and a boy.

Great work, and I liked your explanations very much!

One thing, concerning the English part only, the word "detestation" sounds kinds weird, maybe it'll be better to use "jealousy", "loathing" or anything else - just a personal view.

Loathing would work but jealousy is slightly off. Vonska is a feeling or sensation that is not aimed at anyone but directed inwards i.e. it is not a grudge but grumpiness.
