Did you ever make a friend on LyricsTranslate?

Sorry in advance if this is in the wrong forum. I tried to look at all the options.
Did you ever make a friend on LyricsTranslate?
If so, how ? (Please keep names anonymous if possible. )

I like helping other people understand songs and just contributing, but I feel sad, too, coming here sometimes. I like it, I won't leave. But I ask because I feel that the atmosphere is hardly ever conducive to making friends; however, it is one of the reasons the website recommends a person sign up.

I'm not expecting this to be a social network (don't get me wrong), but I wonder about this. :)

Thanks if you want to reply.

I can't say I've made any friends during my few months here. I've only talked to people about translations, either in form of translation reviews or help forums or even translation requests via PM but not an actual friend-to-friend conversation. I do believe, though, that a common taste in music (judging from the songs one chooses to translate) or an interest in somebody else's language or translating style could initiate a good friendship that could grow in the future. It might take some time before someone in the community seeks to approach you, who knows? :)

I'm on the other end of the spectrum and although I am here for a while, I can't say that I am really close to anyone - yes, I know a lot people, I have talked to a lot too. But maybe it's just me, as I am really private as a person and I don't have many friends, but who knows, maybe one day I will find someone :)

if we weren't such rejects we wouldn't get no translations done... or at least not in the same quantity..

Through LT I have known several people that I like, the problem is that they live very far from me to be considered friends as we don't chatter that much about stuff differently from translating and languages... There's just one member with whom I keep contact outside LT and another who I have added on Facebook.

By the way, LT was/is a very nice place to know people interested in the same things as me ;)

I agree to that. Most of the conversations on Lyricstranslate are confined within Lingual and Cultural Parameters, that means people only communicate within this service, friendship is way too far than communication.

I don't mean otherwise, but you can find friends and might even make many, but the probability is very little

I think of several people I've met here as friends - discussions sometimes sometimes go outside of comments into messages because wander away from translation so they aren't suitable as comments on translation, to the merits of different sorts of lyrics, or different kinds of music, or the weather, or whatever.

Would it be time to promote a LT conference via Skype? :p

Idon't know who's furthest East, but I reckon Alma's probably furthest West of those who might be interested. Maybe he could try to coordinate?

Today though is not a good day - my time-zone jumps an hour about 4 hours from now, I suspect others will be jumping too. Tomorrow will be better (after Rio time has jumped, if it too does it this wekend).

I'd be most glad to organize a meeting like this, but I'm afraid that due to the diverse timezones users are in, it will be very hard to contact a group of people. But we can think of ways as to connect.

It could be good. I'll take this for the other mods and Admins, as it can turn into an actual event for the website.

What we can do is a group chat (only if people are willing to share their ID's) over Skype. This feature at least is supported on all platforms.
Time differences might not be an issue for a chat.

I haven't yet, but I just joined today so that's expected. I hope I can meet people who can help me with the languages I want to learn. This seems like a great community so far, and I hope to make some friends.

Also, I think the Skype chat is a great idea!

Hello! Nice question, first of all. I have made 3 friends here. I have relations with 2 of them via facebook and whatsapp. We also had skype chat, if I am not wrong. And sometimes I feel like they are somehow closer to me than my "friends" in real life. Plus, it's always good to have friends from all around the world. Fantastic :)

I've definitely met some awesome people on LyricsTranslate! I didn't expect to make friends on the site -- I just joined in order to practice translating stuff -- but I've ended up chatting fairly often with several people on account of us constantly commenting on each others' translations. It's been fun discussing languages & poetry with people from around the world :)

I have not. I've talked to very few people. I wish I was better at getting to know people. I am always kind of waiting for someone to PM me because I am too afraid to make contact. Applies to real life as well.

No, it's not just snails Mark, they will generally eat any food that tastes good when taken with a decent wine.

And of course some food is eaten that tastes good even with a lousey wine too, although that is of course done mainly by people with awful taste in wine (mostly foreign toursts) and people who can't afford decent wine.

Of course some Frenchmen eat any food which tastes bad enough that numbing the tastebuds is an acceptable reason and excuse for drinking too much wine, but that must surely happen in every country where some wives nag a lot.

I've never known anyone but an American drink tea scalding hot, but perhaps there are some Brits who do it.

The sad thing about Brit drinking habits is that the majority drink beer freezing cold (between -1 and +4 degrees C), a habit introduced to London in the 50s or 60s (but now spread throughout the three mainland countries) by drinkers of cheap Australian lager which had to be drunk before it warmed up too much and failed to disable the taste buds, otherwise it could produce an inconvenient reaction (such as regurgitating widely).

I'll never forget the cheap french knock-off of a german pils we drank in Port Grimaud on the camping grounds in 1998. it was called "Waldenbraü".. with the umlaut on the wrong vowel..

I think the "mutual culinary distaste" is mostly an ongoing joke rather than a serious legacy of ancient quarrels.

I mostly rate French food higher than English (because most of the English are either experts at cooking badly and/or think that junk food is preferable to nutritious food) and Scottish food higher than French food. Of course snails are about as pleasant as india rubber would be if cooked with butter and garlic, but many English people carefully cook their steaks to acheive that same rubbery texture.

Perhaps I rate Scottish food highly because I miss the breakfasts I used to get in the early 70s when getting off the night train from London to Edinburgh at about 6am after day or two working down south and having time to take breakfast at the North British Hotel before heading for the office in Dalkeith - that was smoked haddock for the first course, then oatmeal (not boiled as in English porridge) in water with salt and a small amount of chopped fruit, next two Scotch sultana pancakes with butter, then grilled brown trout fillet, then bacon (2 Scottish middle rashers), Lorne Sausage (2 squares), two eggs (lightly fried), sauté potatoes, fried bread, and a liberal supply of toast butter and marmalades and jams, with orange juice, tea, and drinking water throughout. I don't think I could eat that breakfast now (and the North British Hotel is no more, so I don't know where I could get it).

I've tried snails - I thought they were rather unpleasant but then I don't like shellfish either so that's not surprising. Last time I was in Paris I had Steak Tartare which was delicious - unfortunately it made me very unwell for several days afterwards! Best stick to the boiled meats and white bread I guess! ;-)
