it doesn't, it's wrong. It should be Go with you
Well, yes, it does mean that, but depending on the context, it can also mean "go away." This song uses both meanings. To not make it take up more space than necessary, I'll just let you know I posted an explanation on OP's comment :)
I understand your confusion, it might seem rather strange. I'd actually never thought about why it means that, but now that you asked the question, I had to spend a few seconds making sense of it.
Gå, like all the other verbs ending with å, don't have the usual "verb e", making the the infinitive and the imperative indistinguishable from one another. This means that "gå med dig" can mean that someone is going with whoever you're talking to, but also that you're telling the person "go with you(rself)" (or "go, and take yourself with you" / "make sure to go away" if you want to be less literal)
I hope this helped you :)
oh my that's so interesting! thank you!
Aaah yess it does make sense now, thanks!! :D
And, this double meaning is, to me, the beauty of the song. It is in no way gibberish. It expresses that the couple is in a dilemma. They are afraid of being left alone, but at the same time they are also afraid of losing their freedom. This mixed feeling (Should I go with you or should I ask you to leave) is expressed in one single danish sentence "Gå med dig". And in the end, when they kiss, they choose each other. And then they sing:
Taking every road
I want go with you
We'll go to Rome
Taking every path
I want go with you
We'll go to Rome
Now they are playing with the old saying "Every road leads to Rome", meaning "No matter which path you choose, I will go with you"
