Knecht Ruprecht
Von drauß', vom Walde komm' ich her;
Ich muß euch sagen, es weihnachtet sehr.
Allüberall auf den Tannenspitzen
sah ich goldene Lichtlein sitzen.
Und droben aus dem Himmelstor
sah mit großen Augen das Christkind hervor.
Und wie ich strolcht' durch den finstern Tann,
da rief's mich mit heller Stimme an:
"Knecht Ruprecht, alter Gesell,
hebe die Beine und spute dich schnell!
Die Kerzen fang' zu brennen an,
das Himmelstor ist aufgetan,
Alt' und Junge sollen nun
von der Jagd des Lebens einmal ruhn;
und morgen flieg' ich hinab zur Erden,
denn es soll wieder Weihnachten werden!"
Ich sprach: "O lieber Herre Christ,
meine Reise fast zu Ende ist.
Ich soll nur noch in diese Stadt,
wo's eitel gute Kinder hat."
"Hast du das Säcklein auch bei dir?"
Ich sprach: "Das Säcklein, das ist hier;
denn Äpfel, Nuß und Mandelkern
essenfromme Kinder gern."
"Hast du denn die Rute auch bei dir?"
Ich sprach: "Die Rute, die ist hier;
doch für Kinder, nur die schlechten,
die trifft sie auf den Teil, den rechten."
Christkindlein sprach: "So ist's recht,
so geh mit Gott mein treuer Knecht."

das Himmelstor ist aufgetan,
Alt' und Junge sollen nun
von der Jagd des Lebens einmal ruhn;

I must say to you, Christmas is very much in evidence
And everywhere on pine tree tops
I saw little golden lights
And up at the gate of heaven
The Christ child looked out with big eyes
And as I roamed through dark pine forest
He called to me in a clear voice
Servant Rupert, my old friend
Move your legs and hurry up
The candles are now burning
The gate of heaven is open
The old and the young should now
Take a rest from the chase of life
And tomorrow I'll fly down to earth
For it will be Christmas again
I said "Oh dear Lord Jesus,
My journey is near its end
I have only this city left to visit
Where there are some really good children"
"Do you have the sack with you?"
I said "The sack is here
For apples, nuts and almonds
Pious children like to eat"
"Do you also have the rod?"
I said "The rod is here,
But only for children that are wicked,
It will strike them where it should"
The Christ child said "That is right,
So go with god my faithful servant."
The candles are now burning
The gate of heaven is open
The old and the young should now
Take a rest from the chase of life
