Les Deux Ménétriers

Sur les noirs chevaux sans mors,
Sans selle et sans étriers,
Par le royaume des morts
Vont deux blancs ménétriers.
Ils vont un galop d'enfer,
Tout en raclant leur crincrin
Avec des archets de fer,
Ayant des cheveux pour crin.
Au fracas des durs sabots,
Au rire des violons,
Les morts sortent des tombeaux.
Dansons et cabriolons !

Et les trépassés joyeux
Suivent par bonds essoufflants,
Avec une flamme aux yeux,
Rouge dans leurs crânes blancs.
Et les blancs mérétriers
Sur leurs noirs chevaux sans mors,
Font halte et voici qu'aux morts
Parlent les ménétriers :

Le premier dit, d'une voix
Sonnant comme un tympanon :
« Voulez-vous vivre deux fois ?
Venez, la Vie est mon nom ! »
Et tous, même les plus gueux
Qui de rien n'avaient joui,
Tous, dans un élan fougueux,
Les morts ont répondu : « Oui ! »

Alors l'autre, d'une voix
Qui soupirait comme un cor,
Leur dit : «Pour vivre deux fois,
Il vous faut aimer encor !
Aimez donc ! Enlacez-vous !
Venez, l'Amour est mon nom ! »
Mais tous, même les plus fous,
Les morts ont répondu : « Non ! »

Et leurs doigts décharnés,
Montrant leurs cœurs en lambeaux,
Avec des cris de damnés,
Sont rentrés dans leurs tombeaux.
Et les blancs ménétriers
Sur leurs noirs chevaux sans mors,
Sans selle et sans étriers,
Ont laissé dormir les morts.

The two travelling fiddlers

On black horses with no bits,
nor saddles nor stirrups,
through the domain of the dead
go two white musicians.
They ride at a hellish galop,
while scraping at their fiddles
with iron bows,
having strings of hair.
At the thunder of the hard hooves,
at the bright sound of the violins,
the dead come out of the tombs.
Let's danse and caper.

And the joyful dead
follow with breathtaking leaps,
with a flame in their eyes,
red in their white skulls.
And the white musicians,
on their black horses with no bits
Come to a stop, and here's what
the musicians say to the dead:

The first says, in a voice
ringing like a dulcimer
"Do you want to live twice?
Come, my name is Life!"
And all, even the poorest
who had had nothing to enjoy,
in a burst of passion all
the dead answered "Yes!"

The the other, in a voice
which sighed like a horn,
said to them "To live twice,
you have to love again!
So live, then! Entwine together!
Come, my name is Love!"
But all, even the most stupid,
the dead answered "No!"

and their fingers fleshless,
showing their hearts in shreds,
with cries of the damned,
went back into their tombs.
And the white musicians
on their black horses with no bits
nor saddles nor stirrups
allowed the dead to sleep.
