April Moon

April for living, April for singing,
April, the flower of life to the heart,
April for feeling, April for dreaming,
April, the spring dawned.

The moon was in April, in April was the love
which was born one day amongst the roses,
all the empty space was filled with flowers
leaving this song in the air:

Like a swallow1 it got lost by the sea
Like a swallow love prevailed
and left me sorrow to sing about
and the April moon to forget.
~ ~ ~

Tha brilliant blue star, the flower of your mouth,
rose with the dawn.
Where the sea faded away from my sight I loved you
and embraced your body like a skylark.

April for loving, April for dreaming,
April, the flower of life to the heart
April for dreaming, April for feeling,
April for finding a new love.

Like a swallow1 it got lost by the sea
Like a swallow love prevailed
and left me sorrow to sing about
and the April moon to forget.
~ ~ ~

And it left me sorrow to sing about
and the April moon to forget.

Hello Tom.
You are the most suitable translator for this song.
Only one word disturbs me.

You have translated : soledad > empty space

As I know, the English language has two words for "soledad":
(voluntaria) solitude
(involuntaria) loneliness

Kind regards

Hi Vale,

I suspect Rosa could do a better job than me on this song, but thanks for the
(undeserved) compliment. :)

I've gone too long without doing much translation, because my laptop died
on me and I haven't managed to fix it; I gave it to an expert repair outfit
after deciding it was beyond me, and after a week they rang to tell me they
would have to send it off to their headquarters unit as they were getting
nowhere with it. They agree with me that it is probably an obscure
hardware or firmware fault somewhere in the IO subsystem, but could get
no further than I did. So currently I'm working with a machine that I
retired 30 months ago as obsolete and unusable, so that everyting takes
six times as long as it should and I have to roll my own security because MS
no longer supports the anti-malware suite, the software firewall, or the
operating system (and if I let the machine run IE is would be riddled with
malware in under 10 minutes).

Anyway, "soledad:

"soledad" has another meaning: RAE gives "Lugar desierto, o tierra no habitada",
and in this song the meaning is "tierra no habitada (por flores)". It's also a
particular style of music (not relevant here, but that makes at least four meanings,
not just two, in fact RAE lists six meanings in all) - not the syle of this song but
something Andalucian in a minor mode and in 3-time.

I haven't got my decent Spanish-English dictionary with me just now, so I'm stuck
with the online Colins dictionary which seems pretty hopeless. It gives only the
two meanings you mentioned, so wasn't helpful.

I chose "empty space" as a means of saying "lugar desierto (por flores)". Perhaps
"bare ground" would be a better choice because it does state the absence of
flowers, what do you think? Or maybe "bare patches"?

Best regards

Gracias por tu cumplido, Tom. La interpretación, tal vez, pero no la expresión.
Lo miraré a ver si es posible hacerlo mejor
