Реченька туманная
Misty River
- 1. The russian word "Zavetnuyu" in this context I understand as "hidden from others and dear to her memories, precious to her heart".
Here she is telling us about some hidden place in the forest where she and her beloved one have been seing each other for some length of time, so the place is precious to her heart. - 2. lit. "Like pebbles (fell) to the bottom (of the river)"
- 3. a. b. c. The word "river" in the original russian text is used in affectionate diminutive form: "rechen'ka" instead of "rechka". The closest translation to english might be "a rivulet", it means "a small river" or "a small stream" and actually it's right, but there is also some emotional touch to that word in russian language. It's like she is saying "my dear river", the same way when one is adressing to their mother calling her "mommy".
- 4. a. b. c. gossips, the girl heard people talk about her boyfriend dating other girl
- 5. a. b. c. Lit. "Oh, my dear river, roll over the rumors (gossips)"
- 6. a. b. c. Lit.
Otherwise (I won't get over) this deceitful love,
Otherwise (I won't get over) this deceitful love, I won't get over it,
Oy, I won't get over it... - 7. to enchant or bewitch one with a magical beverage to make him love you

The storyline of this song, as I see it (although I may be wrong), is this. It's about a girl, who is in love with a boy and they have been seing each other for some length of time, but some day the girl hears people talk about her boyfriend dating other girl. So she wants to clear things up while meeting him next time at their favorite place, hidden from others - at some forest path by a river. They meet there, they talk, she maybe asks him questions, but he is trying to avoid telling her the truth and the conversation goes awkward, they talk in stumbling, hesitant voices. Maybe a few days later, still being in doubts, she goes back to the same place alone by herself to get it off her chest and to ask the river to help her to resolve the doubts, but the truth stays hidden behind the mist...

About the diminutives in the song. There are a few words in the song that are used in their diminutive forms. They are: "tropinochka" (instead of "tropinka", "tropa") - "a path"; "zapinochka" (instead of "zapinka") - "a falter"; "kamushki" (instead of "kamni") - "stones, pebbles" and "rechen'ka" (instead of "rechka") - "a river", "a stream", "a brook", "a creek". Sometimes it's hard to convey the right meanings of words in their diminutive forms translating from Russian to English. For example, the closest translation of "rechen'ka" to english might be "a rivulet", it means "a small river" or "a small stream" and actually it's right, but there is also some emotional touch to that word in russian language. It's like she is saying "my dear river", the same way when one is adressing to their mother calling her "mommy". The usage of all that words in diminutive forms in the song can be explained by the emotional state of the protagonist, who is downhearted, and she is adressing the path, the river and stones with endearment, like them being her friends, who could comfort her.

Sorry for so many tedious footnotes - I wasn't sure my english could convey all the details of the song.
