Amor, dammi quel fazzolettino

Amor, dammi quel fazzolettino...
vado alla fonte e lo voglio lavar.

Te lo lavo alla pietra di marmo...
ogni sbattuta è un sospiro d'amor.

Te lo stendo su un ramo di rose...
per ogni spina è un bacino d'amor.

Te lo stiro col ferro a vapore... (*)
ogni pieghina è un bacino d'amor.

Te lo porto di sabato sera...
di nascosto di mamma e papà.

C'è chi dice "L'amor non è bello"...
certo quello l'amor non sa far.

Love give me that little handkerchief

Love, give me that little handkerchief ...
I'm going to the fountain and I want to wash it (for you).

I'll wash it on the marble stone ...1
each stroke is (like) a sigh of love.2

I'll lay it to dry on a branch of roses ...
for each thorn is a small kiss of love.3

I'll iron it for you with a steam iron ...
each fold4 is a small kiss of love.

I'll bring it to you on Saturday night ...
hiding5 from (my) mom and dad.

Some say that "love is not beautiful" ...
certainly, they haven't experienced such love.

  • 1. probably some old washing procedure
  • 2. you had to strike/rub the piece of clothing against something
  • 3. could also mean pool or basin of love
  • 4. crease
  • 5. not sure if hiding the handkerchief or the fact that she's coming

Hello TrampGuy and thanks for your appreciation.
I also learn from you, for example you make me find out that “bacino” means not only basin, but also little kiss.
Yes, my choice is to propose valuable, simple songs that have enchanted our parents and grandparents.
I consider many modern songs rather noisy, complicated and presumptuous.
My suggestions for your present translation:
di nascosto di mamma e papà > hiding from MY mom and dad
(She hides from her parents, not from his parents)
certo quello l'amor non sà far > certainly, they haven't experienced such love
I understand differently and I should translate: certainly, that one doesn’t know to make love

Thanks! I'm sure your Italian is generally better than mine, just from the fact your a native Romanian.
As for your corrections :

1. di nascosto di mamma e papà - it took me couple of seconds to see it, but indeed I was mistaken here - fixed!

2. certo quello l'amor non sà far - well I agree that your version is more literal but I don't think it conveys the same idea in English as in the Italian text. It means something along the lines of "certainly, they don't know how love goes" which doesn't sound that good either. But your version "certainly, that one doesn't know to make love" implies that "this one" doesn't know how to "make love", which is an English idiom meaning to have sex. So I don't think that's the case, and I freely adapted it to English so the sentence still make sense.

Well, that's not that much really :)

Btw, I totally forgot to mention : on the 2nd verse, 2nd line you wrote "battuta" when in fact they say "sbattuta" in the song - just a heads up.
