Thank you for your translation. Unfortunately some people rate for all the wrong reasons, hopefully the new site version coming up will employ a more diaphanous rating process were the voter should rationalise the rating. I'll try to give you my suggestions:
Diver is δύτης because it refers to someone who's been down too long in the midnight sea
Midnight is ερεβώδης because it means here deep black like the greek βαθιά μεσάνυχτα ή βαθιά νυχτωμένος and ερεβώδης has a strong metaphorical meaning. Me I would translate in the midnight sea as στα ερεβώδη βάθη because it makes clear that you're in deep shit which is the meaning of the midnight sea here
Stripes is σημάδια because are obvious marks on the tiger which are disregarded by the diver; σημάδια also have a broader metaphorical meaning than ρίγες which would be the obvious translation
Masquerade is μασκαρέματος because it has the same metaphorical meaning as the original
to look so afraid is να φαίνεσαι τόσο φοβισμένος since the diver is the star of the masquerade and should be able to hide his fear from the tiger
I can't tell you the exact meaning of the song but it's manner revolves around the greek saying πιάσε τον ταύρο από τα κέρατα, so your translation should behave likewise
Hey, evfokas!
Thanks a lot for your helpfully notices :)
As you can see, I did change the most of them:
Diver (it have a better meaning now in combination with ερεβώδη βάθη, great, thanks!),
I changed γραμμές to ρίγες, because I didn't want to go to far from Ronnie's symbolic language (with ρίγες he means σημάδια, also the tiger have he's stripes for hiding before his attack, so it's difficult to understand the danger by seeing the stripes), μασκαρέματος is much better than μεταμφίεσης - I forgot this word :) ,
φαίνεσαι/κοιτάζεις it don't makes a great difference to me, because if you 'κοιτάζεις φοβισμένος' you automatically 'φαίνεσαι φοβισμένος' and you 'φαίνεσαι φοβισμένος' because you 'κοιτάζεις φοβισμένος', so I didn't changed it ;)
You're right with the meaning, Ronnie was with his songs a great φιλόσοφος and fairytale-teller, who knew about the real life! All his songs were very serious and with a deep meaning...RIP. When he died, I realized that in my whole life he was there, as a good friend, and I lost him, as a good friend, too :,(
Ok, now! We did make a great step to perfection together with this, I think! ;) Thank you again...
You are welcome
You can also use θάλασσα του ερέβους to be closer to the original lyrics
As far as the stripes go I think what Dio means is that although you see the stripes (marks of a carnivorous beast) you are convinced it's clean, so what it says is that you don't actually recognise the stripes for what they are, insinuating you don't recognise the danger you have to face, so in that line it maybe better to say: μπορείς να δεις τις ρίγες της, μα είσαι βέβαιος(ή θαρρείς) πως είναι καθαρή.
Again at the end it goes "you can feel his heart but you know he's mean"; here supposedly he jumped on the tiger and can feel it's heart, he's feeling just a heartbeat yet he knows now that the beast is very mean. I think this should be translated as μπορείς να νιώσεις τη καρδιά της, μα είσαι βέβαιος(ή θαρρείς) πως είναι μοχθηρή
