Heidi Tamme - Ära koo mu käpikuisse päikest (English translation)

Estonian

Ära koo mu käpikuisse päikest

Ära koo mu käpikuisse päikest,
külmi helbeid me püüda siis ei saa.
Ära koo mu käpikuisse päikest,
lumepall võib peos sulada.

Kuid ma tahan sinu akna alla,
kus ei ole enam jälgi suvest,
sinu akna alla, vanaema,
teha naerusuise memme külmast lumest.

Ära koo mu käpikuisse päikest,
parem kuu või mõni täheke.
Ära koo mu käpikuisse päikest
või kui tahad just, siis õige väheke.

Don't Knit the Sun into My Mittens

Don't knit the sun into my mittens,
then we couldn't catch cold flakes.
Don't knit the sun into my mittens,
a snowball might melt in the palm.

But I want to, under your window,
where there is no sign of the summer,
under your window, grandma,
build a smiley-faced man* of cold snow.

Don't knit the sun into my mittens,
the moon or some little star would be better.
Don't knit the sun into my mittens
or if you really want to, then just a bit.

The same goes for reusing parts of my translations in your own (parallel) translations. Id est: it is forbidden. (If a translation is IYO slightly wrong, I'd be glad if commented or PMed.)
If you want to translate my translation into a third language or use it as a basis, you are welcome. Especially if you do it on this website. Just be so kind and mention it and me. :) You can also notify me (in addition, it would make me recheck my work and maybe find errors that you wouldn't copy then) but you don't have to.

Most of my translations are works in progress. One never knows when a revelation can strike. One word: recheck.

*In Estonian snow-man is "lumememm", roughly snow+granny.
