Oh You, Who Entertain Such Great Conceit

Oh you, who entertain such great conceit
And live carelessly, ignoring what you should be,
Learn here these lessons from one punished, such as me:
With my warning, all your deeds with care you'll treat.

Consider how now, has become mere soil
The most praised of all beauties, who lies here
And that all in life is dust; it's naught, my dear
And that less than naught's your life, your mortal coil.

Consider that strict Death
Won't respect neither beauty nor great wit
And, though certain as it is, doubtful remains.

Accept thus, from this cold grave, my warning breath,
Think of your eventual end: do care for it!
For you know how certain is your coming death...

Author's comments:

Advice given by a dead lady, from inside her grave, to another lady who was filled with vanity and walked into a church taking great care to be both noticed and admired by everyone there, before sitting next to the sepulcher's stone and curiously reading this epitaph, which was written on it.
