Slowdive - 40 Days (French translation)

English

40 Days

Forty days and I miss you
I'm so high that I've lost my mind
It's the summer I'm thinking of
Forty days and I'm blown away

If I saw something new
I guess I wouldn't worry
If I saw something new
I guess I wouldn't care

You said you're always sleeping
But if so, I'll be leaving
It's just that I'm always falling
And it makes me feel bad, yeah

If I saw something new
I guess I wouldn't worry
If I saw something new
I guess I wouldn't care

Just to try and watch you
Said I love the way that you smile (I don't know)
Makes me try and watch you
I said I love the way that you smile (I don't know)
Smile whenever I watch you
I said I love the way that you smile (I don't know)
Smile whenever I watch you
I said I love the way that you smile (I don't know)

40 jours

Versions: #1#2
Quarante jours et tu me manques.

Tu m'as dit que tu passais ton temps à dormir,

Alright, here are some of the suggestions that I have. I will add another comment for the ones that I figure out later :).

It's the summer I'm thinking of -> I'm not really sure what he means by this, but I would translate it as: 'C'est l'été dont je pense" like he is talking about a particular summer

It's just that I'm always falling -> Something about him never being enough like "falling short." This phrase of falling appears a lot in rock songs for some reason and I can never fully explain what it means. Something about "losing faith in what you thought was guaranteed / you could do."

And it makes me feel bad -> It makes him feel bad that he is always failing at reaching other people's expectations

If I saw something new
I guess I wouldn't worry
If I saw something new
I guess I wouldn't care

-> I think that all of that means that he likes how things are now (with a girlfriend, his life, or something else) that if something/somebody else came along, he wouldn't care or worry because he likes the things/people that he has right now

Said I love the way that you smile, don't -> I'm not really sure what the 'don't' means in this phrase, but I could only assume that it would mean something like "don't disagree" or "don't stop doing it" because he says after that it makes him want to watch her, so he doesn't want her to hide her smile.

This is my best bet of what the song is about. It's kind of all over the place, but if anything else doesn't make sense, I could try and decipher it for you :).

Right, so "falling" has nothing to do with "falling for someone" ? more like "I feel inadequate" or something like that ?
What about the Urban Dictionary definition for "falling" then ? Just another possible meaning ? not applicable there ? rubbish ? Regular smile

don't -> I trust you on this, but that still contradicts what I understand of the effect of "don't" at the end of a sentence.

Mmm... I need a little pause. I'll go back to it with a fresh look in a few hours.
I'll need a bit of time with your Rolex too anyway. Regular smile

La Fille avec le Visage    Fri, 20/10/2017 - 19:32

Yes, at least as far as I can tell in this context.
The Urban Dictionary definitions are the acts of 'falling in love", "coming down from a high", or "being on your period". None of those apply here. The only definition that I've ever heard somebody use is the first one. The second one I've never heard, and the third one is really old so nobody uses it anymore

I don't think I understand the effect of don't at the end of a sentence. Could you explain it to me?

Alright, I do appreciate you taking the time to look over it, so thank you Regular smile

Now that the transcription makes sense, what about "falling" simply meaning he still loves her? (he won't believe she'll be sleeping forever, he still loves her and that makes him feel bad)
Like a modern version of I am stretched on your grave or something ?
What do you think?

La Fille avec le Visage    Sat, 21/10/2017 - 01:41

I think that it definitely could mean that. I don't see any other meaning of falling that would fit this song better; Especially due to how he feels bad about it, like he can't stop himself from still loving her.

petit élève    Sat, 21/10/2017 - 01:46

Ah, that's a relief.
This garbage transcription made English look harder than Russian for a moment Regular smile

Gavier    Fri, 20/10/2017 - 19:25

That "don't" on the end of the lines...
If you listen closely it's a different voice singing "I don't know"

More like this:

Just to try and watch you
Said I love the way that you smile (I don't know)

Gavier    Fri, 20/10/2017 - 19:39

I think that's what they sing. What I'm certain of though is that the "don't" isn't part of the same line.

I've added the video to help Regular smile

Gavier    Fri, 20/10/2017 - 20:17

Ah of course! Should have thought of checking the not-always-but-sometimes accurately named genius.com Regular smile

La Fille avec le Visage    Fri, 20/10/2017 - 20:19

Haha, some of the explanations on the song don't make any sense or are only mildly English, but we got our answers for the "I don't know" part Teeth smile

Gavier    Fri, 20/10/2017 - 20:24

Indeed - And knowing the circumstances of its creation is certainly a good starting point.
That site (like any site) is only as good as its contributers. I've seen some great stuff AND some utter tosh there. Wink smile

La Fille avec le Visage    Fri, 20/10/2017 - 20:27

Very true. I have also seen my fair share of things that don't even mildly correspond with the song and other things that make total sense. Either way it is a pretty useful website Regular smile

petit élève    Sat, 21/10/2017 - 00:23

Well, seems the problem solved itself while I was out to buy a paper Wink smile

@Taylor, about this "don't" in the end, I had in mind sentences like "Playing with fire is fun, but it's dangerous, so just don't", or "If you wanna do it, do it. If you don't, don't" Regular smile
i.e. the negation of a previous action ("don't do what I just said" or something)

Now that this "don't" is out of the way, it becomes an academic question though.

I always wonder how garbage like this wrong transcription can so easily spread planetwide. One idiot with enough nerve to publish a piece of rubbish and next thing you know the nonsense has been copied a million times over all across the Net to sell ring tones to clueless kids who apparently holler out for more.
Still a few men and women of good will raise up to the challenge. As planetary sanity stands at the crossroads and the fate of human intelligence hangs in the balance, our unwavering resolve alone can prevent all that we have known and cared for from sinking into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the abject failure of common sense. Stand firm, my brethren, ours is a noble cause, and we have been given the place of honour. This is our finest hour.

La Fille avec le Visage    Sat, 21/10/2017 - 01:35

Ah, that was what you were talking about ! Haha, thank you for clearing that up.

Yeah, it's a tragic story Sad smile I just wish that every website had the right lyrics to every song ever. Guess we'll just have to keep fixing the problems Teeth smile

Gavier    Sun, 22/10/2017 - 09:54

Marchons, marchons Teeth smile

The older order changeth, yielding place to new. God fulfills himself in many ways. And soon, I suppose, I shall be swept away by some vulgar little tumour. Oh, my boys, my boys, we're at the end of an age. We live in a land of machine translations and transcriptions by cloth-eared clowns. Shat on by Google Translate, shovelled up by Genius. And here we are, we three, perhaps the last island of beauty in the world.
