Jüri Pootsmann - Aga siis (English translation)

English translation

But Then

Silently you sneaked inside in the middle of a blue night
You are looking at the silence, the belt is sliding off
Snowlight is creating cold glints onto the ceiling
Spring is too far away, our wish is too far away
But we are getting distant like in a dream1
There is no direction towards us, no direction inside us
and we are getting distant like in a dream
There is no direction towards us, no direction inside us

But then dark night is laughing around us again
But then dark night is laughing around us again

In this cold silence, your icy voice is getting congealed
What has got distant is like a game of mirrors
But we are getting distant like in a dream
There is no direction towards us, no direction inside us
and we are getting distant like in a dream
There is no direction towards us, no direction inside us

But then dark night is laughing around us again
But then dark night is laughing around us again

Once, you went under warm clouds along old streets
Morning took us onto its lap, that day sang to us

But then dark night is laughing around us again
But then dark night is laughing around us again

But then dark night is laughing around us again
But then dark night is laughing around us again

But then dark night is laughing around us again
But then dark night is laughing around us again

  • 1. Truthfully this line sounds more normal in English, we+farther+stay... It doesn't elaborate distant 'from what'... Anyway, this translation here might be wrong. BUT someone on YT put is as "we are drifting apart"
The most neutral or obvious translation might be, "and we keep/hold distance" or "we stay distant" but thet wouldn't have much dream quality IMO, they might be too active. Tell me what you think.
The tricky part - of course - is that this here is poetic and the fact that the word "eemale" is not static, "eemal" would be static but that is not as the expression goes.
Now that I have finally thought about the expression, actually I was struck by a random revelation half a year after the last correction, I think it means "We [purposefully] remain on the sidelines" but they don't really do it purposefully because they do it "like in a dream". To me the dream part sounds like 'by a sudden shift' or "outside" there is something muted about the sounds and colors. I believe I can finally close the case..

The same goes for reusing parts of my translations in your own (parallel) translations. Id est: it is forbidden. (If a translation is IYO slightly wrong, I'd be glad if commented or PMed.)
If you want to translate my translation into a third language or use it as a basis, you are welcome. Especially if you do it on this website. Just be so kind and mention it and me. :) You can also notify me (in addition, it would make me recheck my work and maybe find errors that you wouldn't copy then) but you don't have to.

Most of my translations are works in progress. One never knows when a revelation can strike. One word: recheck.

Author's comments:

[Jan, 2nd 2017] This second translation to English exists because the previous transcription was partially wrong and right now the Tongan and Spanish version are based on that first English translation and the Finnish version is partially based on the wrong transcription.
And I'm trying to provide some variety when it comes to the choice of words. Regular smile
[Dec, 3rd 2017] It seems that I cannot provide that variety anymore. Sad smile
If you are interested in the variety (not copy-paste), try Internet archives https://web.archive.org/web/20161115023138/http://lyricstranslate.com/en...
But ignore the parts that had been mistranscribed.
