High spirits (Beau fixe)

English translation

High spirits

I rather like the red roses, the white roses
you offer me for bad or no reasons1
I also like to put some rouge on my white cheeks,
just for an evening, for any odd reason
I feel good in the laziness of our Sundays
I am farther away when it gets a bit cold
I'm only awaiting your warm shoulder to pour my heart out on...
I also like these small gestures

All this
is but hanging by a thread,
a breath of wind, a flutter of lashes.
Should one
of us slip away,
all this
is but hanging by a thread.

I also like it when I go wherever you like,
I like the day you come back just as much.
I would like to have quavering words for you,
to forget to loose my way.
I like so much to run to you breathlessly,
without keeping the best for last.
I only want to lay my hand in yours2
and lie down till early morning.

All this
is but hanging by a thread,
a breath of wind, a flutter of lashes.
Should one
of us slip away,
all this
is but hanging by a thread.
All this
is but hanging by a thread,
a breath of wind, a flutter of lashes.
Should one
of us slip away,
all this
is but hanging by a thread.

  • 1. she hijacks the expression "à tort ou à raison" (be it wrong or right) and replaces it with something that means "for wrong reasons or for no reason at all"
  • 2. the French also uses an unusual way of speaking
Do whatever you want with my translations. I'm not rich enough to sue you anyway.

Author's comments:

"beau fixe" means "(stable) sunny weather", but the song hints at the expression "avoir le moral au beau fixe" (to be in high spirits).

The French is rather delicate. I hope I did not make a mess trying to mirror it in English.

That's charming!
Can't think of any improvements :-)

Thanks. I did spend quite a bit of time on this one.
The French is especially delicate, and the mood quite charming indeed.
Glad I could convey a bit of all that.
