As for the word pianoforte---this is the full name of the instrument commonly known as the piano. Its name comes from the two Italian words "piano," meaning "soft," and "forte," meaning "loud." The ability to play both loudly and softly was revolutionary for instruments at the time of its introduction. It entered English as pianoforte, but was eventually shortened to just piano.
