Kind of a strange question. I really enjoy watching Disney movies in Greek to help with my listening skills. I'll be going to Greece soon and I'm wondering what the subtitles are like on Greek versions of Disney movies. For example, does the Greek subtitle match the spoken Greek word for word (I'm hoping this is the case)? Also does anyone know where I can find written Greek lyrics for Disney songs (not translations of the original English version)? Thanks!

Good morning,

I am not Greek nor do I speak the language but I am sure that the subtitles are NOT the script of the Greek version of the film. In other words, it means that what you see written is just a translation of the original version while the spoken part is just an adaptation.

There is just one case, as far as I know, where the subtitles are identical to what the characters say: in the original version of a film because the subtitles are the script in this specific case.

I hope to be clear at least. But I may be mistaken.

Ah I see, well that's unfortunate haha. The only accurate Greek subtitles I'm finding are on Youtube clips of the songs, but I guess they are transcribing the Greek script themselves as they listen to the songs. Thanks for the info!

Hey, I'm Greek, you can ask me anything.
As it concerns Greek subtitles in English disney movies or general movies, they are not accurate I'd say. I mean they don't fit the English lyrics but they approach the meaning.

Yes, that's right :)
As for the songs, you can find plenty of Greek Disney's songs on the site!

Hello. if I understand right you're talking about the movies that are meant for deaf people? Where the words of the actors are written in subtitles? If that's the case then no. Most of the time the subtitles don't match 100% what is being said on the movie . They have to "cut" many words as there's not too much space for the subtitles.

The Greek movie follows the original English one but it's not 100% the same. They change the words, sometimes the names as well ( usually if it's a nickname they'll use the Greek version of it ), if there's a reference to a celebrity name the will use a Greek celebrity instead etc

The songs are not the translation of the English ones. They're a remake of the originals and usually they try to be as close as possible to the English songs but still they're quite different and more Greek-friendly if I can say so. They just try to keep the meaning of the English lyrics. But sometimes they just stick to translation of the song. I guess it depends on the translator of each movie

If you write on the searching bar the title of a movie e.g https://lyricstranslate.com/en/aladdin-ost-lyrics.html you'll find the songs of the movie in each language's version.

PS I'll try to transcribe some songs in Greek as well.

Thanks for your answers. Yeah, I guess I'm out of luck then. These are the kind of subtitles I was hoping would be on the DVD's : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpk9V8Y9WTo

I've been trying to find the lyrics from the songs of Oliver and Company (Ο Όλιβερ και η παρέα του). If you could transcribe any that would be great! :)

No you won't find a full movie like this. You'll be lucky if you find it only with the Greek subtitles.

In this video they have translated the Greek song. The Greek version and the original English song are quite similar but differ in some points.

In the old Disney movies they used to just translate the English song into Greek but nowadays they remake it.
