You can find out the sense by translating this idiom literally. It means that the husband has stuffed himself with pears. That's a good explanation of his dopey condition. I'm sure that this idiom comes from everyday life, and it has become common because of the nice rhyming and because of the frequency of the described situation of inaсtivity that husbands sometimes tend to get into for many reasons.
