Matmatah - À marée haute (English translation)

English translation

At high tide

I stole for years
Above all suspicion
Gorged myself at every trough
For the good of the nation
I was the chosen one, the magnificent
Young wolf amongst the leading lights
The jewel of the republic
I was the guarantor of your laws

And now they’re knocking at my door
Like flushing an animal from his lair
Why treat me like that?
What am I accused of exactly?
A few misappropriated funds
Fraudulent accounting
Billing errors
From my most generous hours

I would’ve like to stay a little longer
But it seems that these gentlemen
Are awaiting a confession
My goodbyes

No matter what, I shall return
My temples grey, my head held high
Your brains washed of all memory
Of my unpardonable crimes
From my cinders I’ll be reborn
I’ll be the phoenix of these hosts 1
No matter what, I shall return
At high tide

Weakness, power or confidence
I’ve used them, abused them
I’ve had a financial orgy
Fucking you against or with you will
Before incorruptible judges
My truth will burst out
And if the ethics are sordid
We’ll laugh about it in time
I’ll sail on a little longer
From Swiss bank accounts to litigations
Let me be forgotten a while
Amongst the gods

No matter what, I shall return
My temples grey, my head held high
Your brains washed of all memory
Of my unpardonable crimes
From my cinders I’ll be reborn
I’ll be the phoenix of these hosts
No matter what, I shall return
At high tide

From obscene to respectable
Here I am back in the arena
Whoring myself from table to table
At the big sponsors ball
I was persona non grata
And now amongst the upper crust
Being welcomed once again into the arms
Of the republic of my pals

I would’ve like to stay a little longer
But it seems that these gentlemen
Are dismissing all charges against me
Granting me a glorious future

No matter what, I shall return
My temples grey, my head held high
Your brains washed of all memory
Of my unpardonable crimes
From my cinders I’ll be reborn
I’ll be the phoenix of these hosts
No matter what, I shall return
At high tide

No matter what, I shall return
At high tide

Nice song and translation! Regular smile

You've just forgotten to translate:
"M’accordent le non-lieu
Un avenir radieux"

THey're at their best in political satires. This one is quite good indeed.

À tapiner -> more like "whoring"

Being welcomed once again into the arms -> "being welcomed" sounds a bit odd to me. "and now the Republic of pals welcomes me..." or something?
Also "la République des copains" is a kind of fixed expression, playing on copain/coquin (pals/crooks)

Good isn't? Great though very odd video - he gets himself scratched by a crab and seems to take on some crab DNA and starts preaching to a crowd of them. Regular smile

Ah thanks I did wonder what the significance of the line about the phoenix was.

Now I thought it was that the swiss accounts were under investigation, But do you think it's a "de...en... /from to" structure - His account have gone from being safe Swiss ones to now being under litigation?

Yeah, I was looking for a play on "working the tables" but whoring is pretty good!

Hmm, I quite like the passive there - otherwise need to reorder the lines to "the republic... wecomes me" - but guess I could. I got that it was like a "buddy buddy group" a bit like "old boys club" but I think "pals" gives a hint towards that idea....

Well "de.. en" is like in "d'aventure en aventure" here, i.e. "one thing after the other".
