Vanessa da Mata - A distância (English translation)

Portuguese

A distância

Nunca mais você ouviu falar de mim
Mas eu continuei a ter você
Em toda esta saudade que ficou...
Tanto tempo já passou, só eu não te esqueci.

Quantas vezes eu pensei voltar

Quantas vezes eu pensei voltar
E dizer que o meu amor nada mudou
Mas o meu silêncio foi maior
E na distância morro
Todo dia sem você saber.

Eu só queria lhe dizer que eu
Tentei deixar de amar, não consegui
Se alguma vez você pensar em mim
Não se esqueça de lembrar
Que eu nunca te esqueci

The distance

You've never heard of me again
But, I still have you
in all the memories that remained...1
So much time has passed, but I didn't forget you.

How many times I thought of stepping back...
and saying that my love had not changed.
But, the silence was bigger.
And, far away from you, I am dying
every day without you knowing it.

What is left of our love remained
(stuck) in time, forgotten by you...
I am living the life we used to live
('Cause) so many things have changed, but I didn't forget you.

How many times I thought of stepping back
And saying that my love had not changed
But, the silence was bigger
And, far away from you, I am dying
every day without you knowing it.

I just wanted to tell you that
I tried to stop loving you, but I failed.
If, by any chance, you think about me
Don't forget remembering that
I never forgot you.

  • 1. Saudades: is probably the most difficult word to be translated into other languages, that's why it doesn't have an equivalent in English, although you may stumble upon 'longing, homesick, etc' but none of them express the full meaning. Well, anyway, I translated it as 'memories'. When you feel 'saudade', you miss those things you used to have, but you don't have them anymore. So, I think 'memories' can be roughly translated as 'saudade', at least in this situation, because when you remember things you had before, you miss them, 'saudade' is when you remember something and miss it.
