Jorge de la Vega - El viejo de la galera (English translation)

Spanish

El viejo de la galera

El viejo de la galera
no se la puede sacar,
porque la ha llevado puesta
desde su mas tierna edad,
sentado en una maceta
mira la televisión,
mientras arranca las flores
que crecen en su bastón.

No puede pensar en nada,
y no recuerda, siquiera,
porque metió la cabeza
adentro de esa galera,
el viejo de la galera
no se la puede sacar,
y lo que más le molesta
es querer quitársela.

Si descubriera, usted,
que lleva una galera,
que aunque quisiera
no se pudiera sacar,
desatorníllesela
de cualquier manera,
o véndasela a cualquiera
en propiedad horizontal,
porque hay galeras que aprisionan la sesera,
y la anquilosan sin dejarla funcionar.

El viejo de la galera
se fue a la orilla del mar
para ver si el viento fresco
logra hacérsela volar,
pero, temiendo que el pobre
se arroje del malecón,
la multitud fue a buscarlo
con galeras de cartón.

Al ver venir tanta gente
con una galera igual,
logró arrancarse la suya,
por resultarle vulgar,
y, una vez que entre sus manos
tuvo la galera el viejo,
de adentro de la galera
pudo sacar un conejo.

Y si admitiera, usted,
que lleva mil galeras,
que, aunque usted quiere,
no se puede ya sacar,
haga un esfuerzo,
de cualquier manera,
y mande usted sus galeras
al museo nacional,
porque, de adentro de una galera enchufada,
nadie nunca sacó nada, ni saldrá nada jamás.

English translation

The old man of the top hat

The old man of the top hat
can't take it off,
because he's been wearing it
since his earliest age,
sitting in a flowerpot
he watches television,
while he pulls out flowers
growing from his cane.

He can't think of anything else,
and he doesn't even remember,
why he put his head
inside that top hat,
the old man of the top hat
can't take it off,
and what annoys him the most
is to want to take it off.

If you discover,
that you wear a top hat,
that even if you wanted
you can't take off,
unscrew it
in any manner,
or sell it to anyone
in horizontal property,
because there are top hats that imprision the brain,
and annilhate it without letting it work.

The old man of the top hat
went to the shore of the sea
to see if the fresh wind
achieves to fly it up,
but, fearing that the poor man
throws himself from the pier
the crowd went looking for him
with carboard top hats.

By seeing so many people
with a similar top hat,
he achieved to take his one off
by seeming it vulgar,
and once the old man
had the top hat in his hands
from inside of it
he could take a rabbit off.

If you admit,
that you wear a thousand top hats,
that even if you wanted
you can't take off,
do an effort,
in any manner,
and send your top hats
to the national museum,
because, from inside a plugged top hat,
nobody ever took anything off, and nobody ever will.
