Hello

I took these lyrics from another website and they contain errors. I was able to fix some but not all. The words I think are wrong are in bold (there are probably more errors).

Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgL6eHLAzJo&t=80s
(the song starts at 1:20)

Thank you Regular smile

- - -
The hands and the lies and the things that they did
Have created a rift in your heart.
And it's too wide to span,
I am only one man
And my efforts have torn us apart.

I gave you all that a lover could give
And yet you couldn't let me inside.
You said that you care, that the feelings were there,
But behind a wall where they hide.

I don't know what more I could have done to heal your heart.
I want to hurt the ones who've hurt you,
I want to really make them pay.
I want to hurt the ones who've hurt you
For stealing our chance at love away.

I gave you a ring and I wrote you a song,
And I told to your heart on my hand.
Then I looked in your eyes
And hoped for a sign
That you loved your man.

I sang of our love from the tops of the trees,
And I wrote both our names in the sky.
Yet on the face of a book,
You advanced all the rooks,
Yet you left your king to die.

And I don't know what more I could have done to heal your heart.
I want to hurt the ones who've hurt you,
I want to really make them pay.
I want to hurt the ones who've hurt you,
For stealing our chance at love away.

I want to hurt the ones who've hurt you,
I want to dearly make them pay.
I want to hurt the ones who've hurt you,
For stealing our chance at love away.

And so, I suppose, this is really goodbye.
God, I hope, that you saw how I tried.
And I envy the man who'll be holding your hand
On that day your demons die.

I wish you all that love has to give,
It's around you just all the time.
'cause love is a thing
Like a bird on a wing,
Once you break that cage inside.

And I don't know what more I could have done to heal your heart.
I want to hurt the ones who've hurt you,
I want to really make them pay.
I want to hurt the ones who've hurt you
For stealing our chance at love away.

I want to hurt the ones who've hurt you,
I want to kill them with rage.
I want to hurt the ones who've hurt you
For making you this way.

And I told to your heart on my hand -> And I tattood your heart on my hand
It's around you just all the time -> It's around you just all of the time (third last verse)

Everything else seems to be correct.

Do you know what "You advanced all the rooks" means in this context? I only found explanations about chess.

Rook as a verb means "to cheat" and as a noun it means someone who cheats in a game of cards but "advanced" is a bit more tricky...Maybe "help" or "used", i.e "helped all the cheaters" (not likely) or "used all the tricks to cheat me".

I think understanding the previous line ("on the face of a book") is important in understanding the meaning of this line. To me "on the face of a book" seems illogical (and it didn't return any Google results). This may be far fetched, but since the singer is not a native speaker, maybe he meant "in the face of the book", which means "when faced with the book", i.e when made to swear on the bible. Thus it could be interpreted that the woman of the song started to lie when asked if she really loves him.

That's really interesting.
I think I misunderstood the previous line. Could you explain it too? ^^

I take back the "not a native speaker" thing. Let's see what the others have to say about this.

The line about rooks is indeed a reference to chess, I'd say. Regular smile He mentions another piece, the king, in the next line.

Hello, guys, there's one thing I've noticed.
"But behind is a wall where they hide" which he sings as But behind's a wall where they hide

A rook is another name for a castle in chess. Its primary function is to defend the king so she sort of moved forward both her rooks and left her king (i.e. him) defenceless, homeless, whatever. Regular smile

Your first bold line is in fact: "And I tattooed your heart on my hand" :-)

Sandring's hearing of the line above is also correct too.

I didn't know that "rook" can mean to cheat. I've honestly never heard it used like that before and had to look it up. I'd say it's not very common. I don't personally think that that's the meaning here, interesting though it is, but rather that it is all part of a chess metaphor as others have already said.

/edit/ oops I see that "tattooed" has already been spotted!

Rooks and rogues live in Shakespeare's books. Sounds outdated now Regular smile
