Tadeusz Woźniak & Alibabki - Zegarmistrz swiatła
- 438 reads

Hi,
I terribly fell in love with this song, maybe someone could translate the lyrics into English (best would be German).
Here the lyrics:
A kiedy przyjdzie tak¿e po mnie
Zegarmistrz Œwiat³a purpurowy
By mi zabe³taæ b³êkit w g³owie
To bêdê jasny i gotowy
Sp³yn¹ przeze mnie dni na przestrza³
Zgasn¹ pod³ogi i powietrza
Na wszystko jeszcze raz popatrzê
I pójdê, nie wiem gdzie, na zawsze
A kiedy przyjdzie tak¿e po mnie
Zegarmistrz Œwiat³a purpurowy
By mi zabe³taæ b³êkit w g³owie
To bêdê jasny i gotowy
Sp³yn¹ przeze mnie dni na przestrza³
Zgasn¹ pod³ogi i powietrza
Na wszystko jeszcze raz popatrzê
I pójdê, nie wiem gdzie, na zawsze
A kiedy przyjdzie wreszcie po mnie
Zegarmistrz Œwiat³a purpurowy
By mi zabe³taæ b³êkit w g³owie
To stanê jasny i gotowy
Sp³yn¹ przeze mnie dni na przestrza³
Zgasn¹ pod³ogi i powietrza
Na wszystko jeszcze raz popatrzê
I pójdê, nie wiem gdzie, na zawsze
Sp³yn¹ przeze mnie dni na przestrza³
Zgasn¹ pod³ogi i powietrza
Na wszystko jeszcze raz popatrzê
I pójdê, nie wiem gdzie, na zawsze
Regards Turnvater

English and German translation.
No attempt made to rhyme.
The Watchmaker of Light
===================
And when he comes for me,
The purple Watchmaker of Light,
To stir the skyblue in my head,
I'll be bright and ready.
The days will flow point-blank through me,
The floors and airs will fade away,
I'll take everything in one more time,
And I'll head off, I don't know where, forever.
(repeated 3 times)
Der Uhrmacher des Lichtes
====================
(3 mal wiederholen)
PS.
Tadeusz Wozniak is the performer, "Alibabki" is the female ensemble.
"Alibabki" is a pun on "Ali Baba", a character from Arabian "1001 Nights". "Baba" is a slang term for an older woman in Polish, "babka" is a slang term for a young, attractive woman, kind of like "babe" in English. "Babki" is plural of "babka".
Hence "Alibabki" = "Ali Babes" or something like that.
great! thank your very much.
now it´s up to everybody what he himself thinks, what those lyrics mean.
or is there a common interpretative approach for those lines?
greets
I think most people would agree that it's a song about dying. My interpretation:
- "the watchmaker of light" is Death, whose job, like a watchmaker, is to set the "hour" when "lights" are turned on or off for a man
- the "purple" gives Death authority (emperors and cardinals wear purple)
- "to stir skyblue in one's head" = when Death makes you keel over, the sky seems to roll around you
- "the floors and airs fading away" = death feels like fainting, your surroundings drift away
- "days flowing through me" = your life flashes before you when you die
- "point-blank" in Polish is literally "shot-through" = could imply a heartbreak, or a violent death
Closterkeller, Poland's top Goth band, did a moody cover this song. I like the second, live version, taped at a rock festival. It has some of the power of the original. As she announces the song, the singer, Ania Orthodox, says "you probably know the lyrics better than the national anthem" (the audience indeed sings along). BTW, Ania seems to have, er... aged a bit between the video and the live show. She still has a great voice, though.

If you speak German, you may be interested to know that the word "zegarmistrz" in the title ( "watchmaker" ) is actually an old, medieval borrowing from German "Zeigermeister" ( "clock-hand master" ).
If you're in a mood for more heady, melodic Polish prog rock from the 60s-70s, you can also check out Marek Grechuta's "Korowod" ( "Human Parade" ):

thank you! i can follow these ideas, now the lyrics make sense!
yes, found it myself, but unfortunately it doesn´t touch me the way zegamistrz swiatla does
Did you notice that we have a special tag for posting video? You can use [ video:youtube_link_here ] (without spaces near brackets).
I'll post the last mentioned video here:
Do you still need that German translation?
