Heart and Soul (Herzblut)

German

Herzblut

Nachts, wenn alles schläft
streu ich dir Sand in deine Augen
Nachts, wenn alles schläft
schenk ich dir einen Traum
Nachts, wenn alles schläft
will ich an deinen Lippen saugen
Nachts, wenn alles schläft
bin ich bei dir
ganz nah

Schenk mir dein Herzblut

Nachts
Tief nachts

Schenk mir dein Herzblut
Vergieß es für mich
Schick mir die Sintflut
Und lass es regnen auf mich

Gib mir dein Herzblut
Vergieß es für mich
Schick mir die Sintflut
Und lass es regnen auf mich

Heart and Soul

Versions: #1#2
At night, when all is asleep
I put sleep in your eyes *
At night, when all is asleep
I give you a dream
At night, when all is asleep
I want to suck your lips
At night, when all is asleep
I am close to you
So close

Give me your heart and soul **
Spill them for me
Make it a great flood
And let it rain on me

At night, when all is asleep
I am the guardian of your innocence
At night, when all is asleep
I make sure nothing happens to you
At night, when all is asleep
I kiss the salt out of your wounds
At night
Late at night

Give me your heart and soul
Spill them for me
Make it a great flood
And let it rain on me

Author's comments:

* The concept of the German Sandmaennchen that throws sand in children's eyes to make them sleepy is not really well known in English speaking parts of the world. If at all, it is associated with the rather grim short story by E.T.A Hoffmann (which was used extensively by Freud and other psychologists)
So... a literal translation might not sound as innocent and harmless as the German phrase.

** Alternatively, one could say : give me your lifeblood, shed it for me... Lifeblood would be a more literal and certainly correct translation, but the word is less commonly used than the German Herzblut which is why I chose the more intuitive 'heart and soul'.
