Francesca Gagnon - Je voudrais bien (English translation)

English translation

If only I could

If only I could have you...
but I can't help but wait.
Time flies, I don't know anymore, you're not there.
If only I could have you, you know it,
but I don't want to hear what you say.
Times flies, I don't know anymore, I'm staying there.

Tell me, what should I do to win you back?
Take my hand, I can't wait any longer.

I'd rather like you to say you're nothing without me,
that I'm dreaming and creating you all at once.
Why do you have to always surrender,
like you would after a fight?1
And why do your eyes show no sign of emotion?

Tell me, what should I do to win you back?
Take my hand, I can't wait any longer.

I often dream of taking you like a king would
I know lack of patience is the worst shortcoming
Why should we always live under your rule?
Why should I get the things I dreamed of
only when they don't make me dream anymore?

Tell me, what should I do to win you back?
Take my hand, I can't wait any longer. (x2)

  • 1. the French uses a rather convoluted pun on "livrer" (confide / join a battle) which would read as "why do you have to confide like one joins a battle"

Author's comments:

The French is rather convoluted. I simplified it a bit to avoid reproducing the endless sentences of the original.
Also she uses "prendre" a lot, but the usual meaning of the word is clearly sexual while here it seems she means "win your love" or something.
