Yoho And A Bottleful of Rum (Joho und 'ne Buddel voll Rum)

English translation

Yoho And A Bottleful of Rum

Ten pirates were drinking on their boat
Until they were boozed up
The rum was strong
One drank himself to death
They threw him overboard

Nine pirates made for their hiding-place
Where all the treasure was missing
In their rage they hanged one
And only eight went out to sea again

Yoho, yoho, yoho, and a bottleful of rum
Yoho, yoho, yoho, and a bottleful of rum

Eight pirates became prisoners in the battle
And they all went to the gallows
Two of them were dead as soon as the moon was up
But the other six had managed to flee

Six pirates were fed up with their captain
Because he had betrayed them
The mutiny raged for hours
In the end three of them were dead

Yoho, yoho, yoho, and a bottleful of rum
Yoho, yoho, yoho, and a bottleful of rum

Three pirates steered towards a reef
With their ship sinking too fast
And just only one made it into a longboat
As for the rest, there was no one left alive

One pirate, he was taken on anew
Very soon all those ten were together
Someone had brought in the plague with him
So this is how it turned into a ghost ship

Yoho, yoho, yoho, and a bottleful of rum
Yoho, yoho, yoho, and a bottleful of rum

Yoho, yoho, yoho, and a bottleful of rum
Yoho, yoho, yoho, and a bottleful of rum

Yoho, yoho, yoho, and a bottleful of rum
Yoho, yoho, yoho, and a bottleful of rum

And a bottleful
And a bottleful
And a bottleful of rum

Dear Nadia,
(I hope you haven't been carried away by the storm Wink smile )
I have some suggestions for you
to hopefully make it more perfect:

>"Zehn Piraten tranken auf ihrem Kahn," = ... on their boat

>"Nur acht fuhr'n wieder raus." = only eight went back to sea/ or: returned to sail,/ or something like that

>" Einer machte das Beiboot klar,
Für den Rest war keins mehr da.
=
One of them launched the lifeboat
For the others there was none left

>"Ein Pirat, der heuerte wieder an;
Bald schon waren zehn zusamm'.
Einer brachte die Pest mit sich,
So wurd's ein Geisterschiff."
=
One pirate rehired
Soon they were ten of them
One of them brought in the plague with him
That way it became a ghost ship

Dear Hansi, thank you for your comments. I'll try to make the best of them. During those times pirates (and seafarers in general) had no lifeboats. They had a conventional boat to go ashore in. It was called a longboat. It was used as a lifeboat if needed or for marooning after a mutiny. The last stanza says that one pirate was taken on again (as a pirate, I presume Regular smile ) but some of the new crew brought in plague and that was how that other pirate joined his former now dead pals. Tenses might help here. Anyway, I like this band so much. Thank you for being patient with my German. But practice makes perfect, doesn't it? Embarrassed smile

>" Einer machte das Beiboot klar,
Für den Rest war keins mehr da."
The meaning of these lines is:
The one guy launched that long-boat just for himself, to save his life, he didn't care for the others, so they had no other boat to saven them and drowned.

>"One pirate, he was taken on again
Very soon all those ten were together"
That sounds like the same guys rejoined. But, since the others had been killed before, it is 10 guys who hadn't been together before.

But, dear, isn't it what's precisely written in the translation? "Made it into a longboat" = Managed to get into a longboat; "was taken on again" = was given another job (I've changed it into "was taken on anew" though to make it clearer) Regular smile

Ah, got it now! No, they were the same ten guys who had died and made a ghost ship. The good old crew who had started all that mess with a booze on their ship! Regular smile

For that it wouldn't have to take the plague.
