To Kapileio

Translation
The Wineshop (or The Dive)
The night is cold, as cold as ice,
And some slight rain's now falling,
While from the corner 'cross the way
The wineshop's lights,
The wineshop's lights are calling.
Then there's this drunk without a cent
Outside the shop where he must stay,
In sadness crouching on the ground
There in the low,
There in that low dark doorway.
He so much wants to go inside
To sit and start to drink his fill
But it's so poor, this run-down dive,
That there's no slate,
That there's no slate to write the bill.

For me, one of the finest Greek songs from the later rembetika era, post-1945. Near perfection. An image of an urban night scene, evoking an aspect of the society of its time.
