Sektor Gaza - Kuma (кума) (English translation)

English translation

Godmother

I have a drop dead gorgeous godmother
Together we drink like swines1 every day
She has loads of booze at home.
When I get bored, I go to my godmother.

What kind of godmother never did it2 with the godfather?
If she never did that, then she's no proper godmother.
What kind of godmother never did it with the godfather?
If she never did that, then she's no proper godmother.

I could go to jail for my godmother's sake.
I'll throw myself into the fire, I'll follow her into battle.
We sing songs together like a pair of nightingales.
We pig out and drink together, she's my godmother after all.

What kind of godmother never did it with the godfather?
If she never did that, then she's no proper godmother.
What kind of godmother never did it with the godfather?
If she never did that, then she's no proper godmother.

She has a husband, I have a wife.
Her hubby is a useless fat lump, my missus is a bloody shrew.
When I sleep with my wife, I'm always depressed,
but my soul is at peace when I sleep with my godmother.

What kind of godmother never did it with the godfather?
If she never did that, then she's no proper godmother.
What kind of godmother never did it with the godfather?
If she never did that, then she's no proper godmother.

  • 1. Couldn't find anything that could match the Russian coarseness here
  • 2. lit. "never was under the godfather". That's a bit crude, but the popular belief is that you cannot be a proper godmother if you never knew what love is Regular smile

квасим в уматень means very approximately "drink hard", but spoken in a very vulgar manner

petit élève    Sun, 06/11/2016 - 20:30

OK, like "fermenting in the [beep]", right?

Is there actually a link with "не в умат" ?

petit élève    Sun, 06/11/2016 - 20:49

OK, I was just fooled by the similitude.

Alexander Laskavtsev    Sun, 06/11/2016 - 20:31

пол-угла = means just "an enormous amount" (don't stick to the words Wink smile )

petit élève    Sun, 06/11/2016 - 20:34

Right, I suspected that, but I was waiting for a confirmation before removing the footnote.

Что за кума, коль под кумом не была, =
What kind of a godmother IS IT, if she never did....?

petit élève    Sun, 06/11/2016 - 20:47

Yes, that would be closer to the Russian, but I think the two sentences are conveying the same idea, in a slightly more compact way.
"what kind of politician does not lie? If he never lied, he's no proper politician"
"what kind of politician is he if he never lied? If he never lied, then he's no politician"

Муж объелся груш generally means that he is quaggy. Wink smile

Gavier    Thu, 07/12/2017 - 16:53

Quaggy? That's a very obscure word... Do you mean like "soft and flabby"?

Brat    Thu, 07/12/2017 - 16:59

Yes, "dopey-flopey". Regular smile

The only convincing explanation I ever got for this idiom made me think it meant someone who would shun all responsability, basically a lazy bastard. But apparently that's not exactly it.

You can find out the sense by translating this idiom literally. It means that the husband has stuffed himself with pears. That's a good explanation of his dopey condition. I'm sure that this idiom comes from everyday life, and it has become common because of the nice rhyming and because of the frequency of the described situation of inaсtivity that husbands sometimes tend to get into for many reasons.

petit élève    Thu, 14/12/2017 - 11:19

What about "useless" in this context then ?

Brat    Thu, 14/12/2017 - 11:40

It's good! As 'hopeless', not to be relied upon...

Gavier    Thu, 14/12/2017 - 11:44

Useless fat lump? Regular smile

petit élève    Thu, 14/12/2017 - 11:45

haha that would sure match the general tone
