The Last Supper (Le Dernier Repas)

English translation

The Last Supper

At my last supper
I want to see my brothers
And my dogs and my cats
And the seashore
At my last supper
I want to see my neighbors
And a few Chinamen
Disguised as cousins
And I want us to drink
Sacramental wine, no less
This wine so fine
That we used to drink in Arbois
I want us to devour
That is, after a few clergymen
A pheasant hen
From the Périgord
Then I want them to take me
High up on my hill
To see the trees sleeping
Tucking their arms in
And I want to yet once more
Throw stones towards the heavens
Proclaiming that God is dead
Just one last time

At my last supper
I want to see my donkey
And my chickens and geese
My cows and my wives
At my last supper
I want to see these Amazons
To whom I was master and king
Or who were my mistresses
When I've had enough punch in my belly
To drown the earth
I'll break my glass
To create silence
And I'll sing at the top of my lungs
To Death advancing
Bawdy romances
That will make young sisters cringe
Then I want them to take me
High up on my hill
To see the night wending its way
Slowly towards the plain
And there, still standing
I'll insult the bourgeois
Without fear or remorse
One last time

After my last supper
I want everyone to go
Have done with the feast
Somewhere else than under my roof
After my last supper
I want them to seat me
Alone as a king
Greeting his vestals
In my pipe, I'll burn
My childhood memories
My unrealized dreams

The remains of my hopes
And I'll only keep
As a dress for my soul
The idea of a rosebush
And a woman's first name
Then I'll gaze
At the top of my hill
At who dances and who guesses
And who lapses finally
And among the scent of flowers
Who will soon expire
I know that I'll be afraid
One last time
