Francis Cabrel - Les faussaires (English translation)

English translation

The fakers

Fake news, fake breasts
Fake photos for fake magazines
Fake healers, fake fortunes
Fake voters in the common graves
Fake soldiers in the fake wars
It’ll end up, it’ll end up
When we’re all fakers

Fake hammers, fake sickles
Fake boys on the arms of fake girls
Fake oaths full of “forever”
Fake painkillers for fake pains
Fake thoroughbreds under fake manes
It’ll end up, it’ll end up
When we’re all fakers

It's insanely hard to escape it
It’s a real puzzle
Even your fake smiles
Give you real dimples

Fake rumours, fake announcements
Fake saviour giving false answers
Fake loves, fake positions 1
Fake singer in his fake car
Fake jewels making fake necklaces 2
It’ll end up, it’ll end up
When we’re all fakers

It's insanely hard to escape it
It’s a real puzzle
Even your fake smiles
Give you real dimples

Fake preacher, fake prophet
Fake player miming the fake defeat
Fake Bible or rather its false reading
Fake tourists in the fake nature

  • 1. in the live version "postures" is replaced with "factures" ie bills, invoices.
  • 2. Une rivière de diamants = diamond necklace

Author's comments:

Cabrel was 13 years ahead of his time on this one!

Faux/fausse could variously be translated as fake/phony/false but with the current popularity of "fake news" it's irresistible!
"Faussaires" could also be translated as "forgers"

aux bras -> "at the arms" ?

Pour en sortir c'est du délire -> "it's crazy hard (to escape it)"

fausse factures -> that's a legal term for a kind of forgery (fake invoices to launder money)

Can't say "at the arms". But "On the arms" works if that's more the intended meaning/

Ah thanks I wasn't sure about those two lines... :-)
