Fate of Life (Ragnarök)

Endless winter, the earth is so cold.
Unrest and war shall conceive the end.
Brothers are turning against one other.
No man shall spare the other one.

Hati1devours the Sun and Sköll2devours the Moon.
A deep darkness encloses the worlds3.
The wolf breaks its chains and roars loudly.
His divine father and the Naglfar4are approaching.

“The sun is turning black,
into the sea, the earth is sinking.
From the skies,
bright stars are falling down.
Vapour and fire
are mingling.
High towards the skies,
a scorching flame is rising.”

Heimdallr’s5horn is resounding for gods and men.
With burning hatred, giants shall approach.
Wodan6is riding forward with the Army of the Fallen7.
Sons and fathers are combating the evil.

The final battle is near, Age of Wolves8, Age of Swords9.
The earth is burning, the mould is shaking.
Day of darkness, day of blood,
day of life and heroic courage.

“The sun is turning black,
into the sea, the earth is sinking.
From the skies,
bright stars are falling down.
Vapour and fire
are mingling.
High towards the skies,
a scorching flame is rising.”

Ragnarök10, portrait of the end,
solitude and rage,
downfall of the gods,
the earth is burning,
the end and the beginning,
a new sun is arising,
gods are reviving,
the earth is blooming once again.

  • 1. Hati Hróðvitnisson = a wolf that according to Norse mythology chases the Moon across the night sky, just like the wolf Sköll (Skalli) chases the Sun during the day, until the time of Ragnarök, when they will swallow these heavenly bodies, after which Fenrir will break free from his bonds and kill Odin (Wodan).
  • 2. Skalli (Sköll) = a wolf that chases the Sun during the day (This part of the lyrics is mythologically incorrect, perhaps intentionally, as the functions of Hati and Sköll have been swapped.)
  • 3. Norse mythology was divided into the following six worlds: Miðgarðr/Midgard (Menn, humans), Ásgarðr/Asgard (Æsir, gods), Vanaheimr (Vanir, other gods), Jötunheimr (Jötnar, giants), Álfheimr (Álfar, elves) and Hel (Náir, corpses; alternative world of the death, besides Ásgarðr).
  • 4. Naglfar (“nail ship”) = a boat made entirely from the fingernails and toenails of the dead, that will ferry death soldiers during Ragnarök
  • 5. Heimdallr (or Heimdall; modern Icelandic Heimdallur) is the watchman of the Germanic/Nordic gods, and he sits on the edge of heaven to guard the Bifröst bridge from the berg jötnar. He possesses the resounding horn Gjallarhorn.
  • 6. Wodan = Odin (the Norse/Germanic supreme deity)
  • 7. Army of the Fallen = the army of the Einherjar (“lone fighters”), brave fighters that died in combat and (temporarily) reside in Valhalla until Ragnarök
  • 8. Vargöld, one of the ages before Ragnarök
  • 9. Skálmöld (also “lawlessness), one of the ages before Ragnarök
  • 10. Levenslot = (let.) Fate of Life; Here it refers to Ragnarök, a series of future events, including a great battle foretold to ultimately result in the death of a number of major figures.
