La Talvera - Lo meu país (English translation)

English translation

My country

If you should know, my country
Doesn't have a name or a border.
It expands across the verses
Of an insane epic!

You can find it along the roads
In the blood of the stones,
In the warmth of grapes,
In the bitterness of frost.

If you should know, my country
Hides amidst the broom.
Inside a blossom that opens,
Inside the hearts of wild beasts.
In the shadow that turns pale,
The westerly wind that sets us free,
In the comfort of a bird's nest
Or a leave's pulse.

My country is down there,
In the middle of a street
Where three children are dancing
For a pittance.
It's down there, in the scream
Of a loser
Who wanders, defeated,
Without hope to ever return home.

My country is there, deep inside
A prison full of ghosts
Who have, as their only echo:
"Either you go on, or you're done".

My country is anywhere
There are people who are stripped of their dignity:
Without documents or honour,
Without a home or land.

If you should know, my country
Doesn't have a name or a border.
It expands across the verses
Of an insane epic!

You can find it in the ponds,
The roughness of an untouched field,
The sharp sting of danger
Or the joys of truancy.

My country is right here
Where rage has its seed,
In the first that is unclenched,
In the fire, in exhaustion.
Inside the wave that drags us away
Inside the wave that throws us out
In the call of the abyss
In the soft hands of the dawn.

If you should know, my country
Hides in far away corners
From the time that runs away
Yet appears to be endless.
In the faded colours,
In the scents of the wild,
In life's sap,
In the fear of the flood...

If you should know, my country
Doesn't have a name or a border.
It expands across the verses
Of an insane epic!

Wherever love is born,
Wherever love blossoms
Amidst the mists of a vision,
The birth of a wild fantasy.
In the words of a child,
In a woman's gaze,
Where laughter freely flows
Where sorrows are destroyed.

If you should know, my country
Doesn't have a name or a border.
It expands across the verses
Of an insane epic!

It hides at the bottom of the river,
Amidst the secrets of the grass,
The soul of the embers,
In the smoothness of a bay...
My country shines
With a thousand folk songs
While, in the infinity, dances
A nation of mermaids.

Look closely at my country,
For it doesn't have a god, or a master:
It is a horse that runs
Without reins or a halter.

My country is everywhere
Where there is a lone battle.
It is where the pleasures are kept
In a celebration's morning after.
If you should know, my country
Is waiting for you everywhere;
If such a place could exist, somewhere,
It would be all over this whole earth...

Author's comments:

There was a guy on YouTube, whose channel was called "Anprionsabeag", and he had many videos with the lyrics to Occitan songs translated to several languages (most often, English, French, Italian, Portuguese and, if I recall correctly, sometimes Catalan and either Welsh or Irish Gaelic). He also had a website that was extremely interesting, and he was a true polyglot.

Sadly, the channel disappeared and I cannot find his website anymore. Still, while the translation above is mine, I would like to remind everyone that he had what I am sure is a more accurate translation on his YouTube channel. And if you can find his website, please let me know its new address, because it was truly fantastic!
