Fabrizio Casu - Mancumari (English translation)

Sardo-corsican

Mancumari

V’è ga dizi chi la vidda
è una cuntinua pasthidda,
in chisthu soggu d’accosdhu, sì parò
abà prubeddi a ippiegammi
acchì vibu di maranni,
si chishta pasthidda è pessa oppuru no.
No arribu mai a fini mesi,
campu pa pagà l’ippesi
pa ticcià la panza di ga dizi chi
“chisthi tassi sevvini pa sanà tuttu”
E a me inveci poi ca m’abarà a sanà?

Mancumari…
semmu tutti di passaggiu
ma candu murimmu zi paghemmu lu viaggiu.
Pa lu mamentu no vi vogliu pinsà
e innogghi puru mi pongu a cantà.

Mi fazi ridì un amiggu,
fabiddendi di trabagliu
dizi chi “si è fissu poi ti poi annuià”,
l’ha dittu in televisioni
a mirioni di passoni.
Daboi di chisthu cosa zi pò augurà?
Mi veni da frasthimatti,
da pigliatti e sthranguratti,
ma nimmancu chissu inveci possu fà,
lu chi possu fà è tirà addananzi e muddu
chi tra poggu pagu puru pa rippirà.

Mancumari…
semmu tutti di passaggiu
ma candu murimmu zi paghemmu lu viaggiu.
Pa lu mamentu no vi vogliu pinsà
e innogghi puru mi pongu a cantà.

Thank Goodness

Someone says that life
is a continuous match,
I agree on this, yes, but
now try to explain to me,
since I live off of hardships,
if this match is already lost or not.
I can never arrive at the end of the month,
I live to pay the fees
to fill the belly of those who say
“these taxes are necessary to heal everything”
Yeah, but who will heal me, then?

Thank goodness…
we are all transient,
but when we die, we’ll pay for our journey.
For the moment I don’t want to think about it
and even now I start to sing.

A fellow makes me laugh:
talking about jobs, he says
“if it’s a steady job, you can get bored”,
he said so on television
to millions of people.
After that, what can we expect?
I just want to swear at you,
to grab and strangle you,
but I can’t do even that,
all I can do is to get by and hush
‘cause in a bit I’ll have to pay even to breathe.

Thank goodness…
we are all transient,
but when we die, we’ll pay for our journey.
For the moment I don’t want to think about it
and even now I start to sing.
