I think the comment that De Curtis composed it in 1935 is a bit out - he published it in 1912.
1935 was the release date for the film "Non ti scordar di me" which featured Gigli (after he fell out with the Met) singing several things, and this thing he sang was chosen as the film title song, but the song was already nearly quarter of a century old when the film was made.
