Mussels and French Chips

French

Moules Frites

[Couplet 1]

On chantera tous :

[Refrain bis]
Paulo aime les moules frites, sans frites et sans mayooo'
(A toi Paulooo)
Paulo aime les moules frites, sans frites et sans mayooo'
(On chantera tous pour toi)
Yo yo yo, yo yo yooo
Yo yo yo, yo yo yooo

Mussels and French Chips

Versions: #1#2

Do you know what he told me Paulo?
Or what a little birdie told him, more accurately
When the latter gets up, it's that a dreamshell went out to the water
And now, he sings

Paulo likes mussels and french chips , without chips and without mayooo'
Paulo likes mussels and french chips, without chips and without mayooo'
Yo yo yo, yo yo yooo
Yo yo yo, yo yo yooo

But before to sit down for lunch
He always drinks a glass of white wine
To forget the dreadful,
Safe and so acrid taste of the ocean
And he is so agile, Paulo
He hasn't to plead
And it's at each time so easy
But this time, she's a little less delicate than Paulo thinks
But from the moment she was shouting

Paulo likes mussels and french chips, without chips and without mayooo'
Paulo likes mussels and french chips, without chips and without mayooo'
Yo yo yo, yo yo yooo
Yo yo yo, yo yo yooo

But he would have to be wary, Paulo
Because no one knows where she bathed, earlier
As she was infected, Paulo won't sing anymore
Or maybe, when he will be bury, Paulo
We'll all sing:

Paulo likes mussels and french chips, without chips and without mayooo'
(Your turn Paulo!)
Paulo likes mussels and french chips, without chips and without mayooo'
(We'll all sing for you)
Yo yo yo, yo yo yooo
Yo yo yo, yo yo yooo

Many thanks for this translation! I had not realised how sad the song was!!! I have copied it and made a few adjustments for my students so that they can see the literal meaning: (1) se lève - gets up (2) aime le moule-frites - likes mussels and chips (3) un verre de blanc = a glass of white wine; (4) l'exécrable - the dreadful/ terrible things; (5) à chaque fois - at each time; (6) que Paola imagine - than Paolo thinks; (7) Mais du moment qu'elle criait - but from the moment she was shouting (Cool où elle s'est baignée= where she bathed. What do you think? I am happy to be corrected - I love looking at translations and learning form them!

I finally edited the text like you said!
I wanted to keep the french reference on "Moules-frites" so I wrote "french chips" to keep a french touch
Anyway you're right for "she bathed" we feel the human part in this meal (So weird too XD)
And, who's Paola? Laughing out loud
Thanks a lot Smile

It might be important to note that the song as a whole is metaphorically about sex, as 'moules' is a (quite well-known in Belgium) metaphor for the female genitals and that the last part of the song, where Paulo dies, is about STD's (probably aids) and that he hasn't been careful enough.
Thought that would be an important side note, since it makes you understand the importance of the song better. Wink

Yes, some comments point out "mayo" is a pun on "maillot".
Forgoing the shirt, as in unprotected sex.
So there are two main levels: metaphor of the popular dish, and wordplay on the condiment of the dish.
Each time the chorus repeats to help the story:
Paulo boasts he likes unprotected sex. The fateful partner he chose describes this very act, at point of climax. Then at Paulo's burial, his friends sing about his habit which indeed killed him.
