The sunray and the goblin (Päivänsäde ja menninkäinen)

English translation

The sunray and the goblin

Versions: #1#2
When sun had ended its journey,
the last sunray was just a moment
left behind her sisters
Dusk was creeping on the grounds,
the sunray with its golden wings
was just about to fly away from it

Only she saw a small goblin, coming towards her;
it had just come out of its cave
You see, a goblin cannot ever before nightfall
live upon the surface of the earth

They beheld each other,
the goblin felt in his chest
a warm feeling
He said: "You burn my eyes,
yet I have never in my life
seen something so wonderful!

It does not matter that your radiance blinds me
It is easy to wander in darkness
Come with me, and I will show you the way to my cave
and take you as my bride!"

But the sunray answered: "Dear goblin,
the darkness will steal my life away,
and I do not wish for death
I have to leave immediately,
unless I fly into the light soon
I cannot live a moment more!"

And so the beautiful sunray left, but still
as the goblin walks alone,
he wonders why one of them is a child of light
and the other one loves night
