Translation

By the window

By the window, a maple has bent over
A bird there, sang with great commotion
Listen, Dear one, how the bird does sing,
There is no good that comes from love

Is that love from God given to us ?
Or is it from the word of the devil ?
Even if you don't want to, you must love
Even if after all that, you must suffer

A gypsy once long ago had told me
That I would be deceived by a dark browed girl
Because of her, I would not see the world
Until the years of my youth shall pass me by

By the window the maple blossoms green
Look out my dear, how it, the wind does sway.
May be it will tear it out by it's roots?
My Dear one, what then will become of us?

andrusyshen 1957 dictionary lists it as a maple
podvesko 1963 dictionary lists it as both maple, and sycamore
salastin 1956 dictionary lists a maple as klen or yavir ???

I'm used to the term Klen as maple here in the US - thanks

I don't it really matters what tree it was. But the funny thing is, I just learned, that the "sycamore's another name is "sycamore maple" :) In other words - it's the same...

"Yavir" is not an ordinary maple. Russians call it "The White Mapple". So these maples are different. That's why the "sycamore" is OK. ;)

Thank you. Agree. By the observation, too, the name "yavir" is in many Ukrainian songs, where is the name "klyon" in many Russian songs.
Cheers!

I like "maple" in the translation. The word is easier to use in the melody. It is close enough. Don't be afraid to modify translation words, if it makes the lyrics more natural. Slava Ukraini !!!
