Ravnene

Der jeg meg så ene i vang monne gå,
jeg hørte to ravner at holde råd.

The Ravens

Versions: #1#2

As I had to go alone in the march
I heard two ravens hold council
one addressed the other:
Where shall we fetch our food today?
Where shall we fetch our food today?

Over there behind the old grass-peat dyke
there surely lies a new-slain knight
and none knows that he lies there
but his hawk, his hound and his heart's dearest

His hound is hunting in the wild woods
his hawk is looking for his prey beyond the clouds
his woman has given another her loyalty
so we can eat our meal in peace

On his white collarbone you can sit
so I hack out his blue eyes
and with a lock of his yellow hair
we'll thatch our nest next spring.

Author's comment:

While the Danish/Norwegian version is a very close rendition of the Scottish original, there are a few minor deviations, which I am explaining in this translation. Enjoy.
