Fenrir
- 1. Surtr is a giant in Norse mythology who carries a massive, glowing sword.
- 2. I.e on Sleipnir, Odin's eight-legged horse, which Hilmar and Brynhildar have stolen.
- 3. Týr is a Norse god of war.
- 4. This last word is either derogatorily directed at Hilmar, or is just here to show the threat is directed at Brynhildur. Comments to back this up or correct me are welcome!
- 5. This is the river separating the living from the dead in Norse mythology.

Thank you so much! I think I used to know how to do this but subsequently forgot, and haven't gotten around to checking how to do it again since I recently came back to this site. It sounds like I probably know less about the mythology than you do - translating these songs has been teaching me that as well as the language :)

You're welcome! And welcome back to the site! For a long time I had to look it up in the FAQ each time I wanted to do footnotes, but these days I think the average reader of my translations wish I didn't know how, because I tend to over-do it... Well, I don't know, I have forgotten much, but I used to be something of a mythology nerd (Greek and Norse, mostly) for a while when I was younger. It's really cool that you've been studying so many languages! Icelandic is one I wish I knew, and maybe one day I'll get around to learning it. :)

About point 4, that part is a dialogue between Fenrir and Hilmar, with Fenrir taunting him and Hilmar answering.
These are Fenrir words:
"You are weak and skinny.
Now I drag you to your death.
You shall break and fall apart.
You will breathe no more."
And Hilmar answers:
"You are a loser and a coward.
I shall tie you up.
You will be bound and tied.
Your own cruelty will destroy you."
All the parts sung by Baldur Ragnarsson with his crazy voice are to be attributed to Fenrir, as far as I can tell. Thus:
"Mortal man, you barely suffice,
your sword is too blunt against Fenrir's jaws."
"The gods and Tyr were costly,
Gleipnir is a weapon you can't handle."
Are boasts and taunts to be attributed to Fenrir as well. Then:
"The hero has trapped me and now
binds both of the wolf's hands."
When Fenrir is captured and bound.
There is another part, which is not present in the lyrics above, from roughly 2:35 to 3:15 in the album song (before the choir starts with "Úlfurinn núna manni mætir,..." around 3:15) when Fenrir and the protagonist are exchanging one-liners again, but I have no idea what they're saying.

Hey, thanks for commenting! Most of that is correct as far as I can see, but my question with point 4 is more about the word 'blauðan' which I have had to leave untranslated as it doesn't make sense in the context. Also, the lyrics from 2:35 to 3:15 are present there, they are the ones from which you quoted the translation:
"þú ert máttlaus og magur.
Þú ert ræfill og ragur.
Nú ég dreg þig í dauðann.
Ég mun binda þig blauðan.
Þú munt brotna og bresta.
Þig skal fjötra og festa.
Framar aldrei munt anda.
Eigin grimmd mun þér granda."
