Rome

Italian → English translation for the song "Roma Capoccia" by Venditti Antonello lyrics.

Italian

Roma Capoccia

Quanto sei bella Roma quand'e' sera
quando la luna se specchia
dentro ar fontanone
e le coppiette se ne vanno via,
quanto sei bella Roma quando piove.

Quanto sei grande Roma quand'e' er tramonto
quando l'arancia rosseggia
ancora sui sette colli
e le finestre so' tanti occhi,
che te sembrano dì: quanto sei bella.

Oggi me sembra che
er tempo se sia fermato qui,
vedo la maestà der Colosseo
vedo la santità der cupolone,
e so' piu' vivo e so' più bbono
no nun te lasso mai
Roma capoccia der mondo infame,
na carrozzella va co du stranieri
un robivecchi te chiede un po'de stracci
li passeracci so'usignoli;
io ce so'nato Roma,
io t'ho scoperta stamattina.

English

Rome

How beautiful you are oh Rome in the evenings
when the moon reflects itself
inside the big fountain
and the couples desert the streets
How beautiful you are oh Rome when it rains

How great you are oh Rome when it’s dusk
and the orange turns red
on top of your seven hills
and the windows are like numerous eyes
that seem to tell you: how beautiful you are!

Today it feels like
if time had stopped here
I see the majesty of the Colosseum
I see the sanctity of the big Dome
and I am more alive and I am better
no, I’ll never leave you
Rome, head of this infamous world
a carriage drives away two foreigners
a second-hand dealer asks you if you’ve got some rags
the bedraggled sparrows are nightingales
I was born in Rome
I discovered you this morning

Excellent translation! Just one small mistake, in the third-from-last line: "passeracci" is "passeri"=sparrows + pejorative suffix "-acci" , nothing to do with "passanti"=passers-by; so the correct translation is "bedraggled sparrows".
