  • 1. This is a popular song of the mondine, women who travelled northern Italy to work in rice paddies.
    The language is a kind of lingua franca used by mondine to communicate among themselves (they spoke different Italian dialects), and consists of a mixture of Italian and various dialects (from Veneto, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Piedmont,…).
    Their master wears ‟nice white trousers” to symbolise his distance from the labour of the mondine, who spent all day with their feet in the water (rice paddies are fields that get completely flooded).
