If You Stop Being Who You Are (Se Deixas de Ser Quem És)

Se Deixas de Ser Quem És

Meu amor d'alfazema
De alecrim e rosmaninho
Queria fazer-te um poema
Mas perco-me no caminho
Nossa Senhora das Dores
Meu raminho d'oliveira
Eu ando cega d'amores
Não me cureis a cegueira
Nossa Senhora das Dores
Sede a minha padroeira
Entra em mim um mar gelado
Em dias que te não vejo
Sou um barco naufragado
Mesmo sem sair do Tejo
Ai de mim que ando perdida
Que ando perdida de amores
Perdida entre temores
Perdida entre as marés
Ai de mim fico perdida
Se deixas de ser quem és
Tens mãos macias de gato
Meio manso meio bravio
Olhas às vezes regato
Outras mar e outras rio

English translation

If You Stop Being Who You Are

My love of spike-lavender,
Of rosemary and topped lavender
I wanted to write you a poem
But I've gotten lost in the way.
Our Lady of Sorrows,
My little olive branch
I'm walking 'round blinded by love:
Do not heal my blindness!
Our Lady of Sorrows
Be my patron saint!
A frozen sea fills me inside
In those days when I can't see you
I am a wrecked ship
That hasn't even left the Tagus.
Poor little me, I am lost
I am lost in love
Lost among my fears
Lost within the tides
Poor little me, I shall be lost
If you stop being who you are.
You have soft hands, like a cat
That is half-domesticated, half-wild
Sometimes you seek a brook
Other times you seek the sea and, some others, a river.
