Without Running Away Again

The good light of the stars
Tell me where to go
If I don't leave, what am I supposed to do?
Tell me if I'll reflect later

And I want
To learn how to mimic you
And hurt like you
But I can't
I'm out of my balance

You know, you know, you know, you know, you know that

I'd think of everybody
But nobody thinks of us
I'd lose my hand to feel hurt if you want
I'd stop crying
At your signals and later
I may fake it
But later, I won't believe in us

I'd run to save and to tell you that this can't last longer like the way it is
I'd run to talk to you, to comfort you, there'll be no longer pain
I'd run to stop time and together with him its torments
I'd run to you and I'll hold you without running away again
Without running away again...

The good wind of the Summer warms in peace those who already know
Make my anger cool down, just in case

You know, you know, you know, you know, you know that

I'd think of a hurt that never hurts us
I'd think of an excuse that never deludes you
I prefer facts over words, even if later
Even if later I prefer those who pretend like us...

I'd run to save and to tell you that this can't last longer like the way it is
I'd run to talk to you, to comfort you, there'll be no longer pain
I'd run to stop time and its tortures together
I'd run to you and I'll hold you without running away again
I'd run to you and I'll hold you without running away again

From the place where we ran
And where you were stopped
I lost you
But I'll never escape again
I'll...
Never run away again

I'd run to save and to tell you that this can't last longer like the way it is
I'd run to talk to you, to comfort you, there'll be no longer pain
I'd run to stop time and together with him its torments
I swear, I'd do that if this anger let go of me...

I'd run to save and to tell you that this can't last longer like the way it is
I'd run to talk to you, to comfort you, there'll be no longer pain
I'd run to stop time and together with him its torments
I'd run to you and I'll hold you without running away again

Hi!

A couple of suggestions. You're correct in that double negatives are a "no-no" in English, and the titled as you translated it does sound a little off. In Italian, double negatives are okay and actually normal! Though when translating you need to keep in mind the rules of the language you are translating into. So I would render the title as something like "Without Escaping Ever Again". You could also translate "scappare" as "run away".

The second line "dimmi adesso dove andrò", the 'dimmi' is an informal command, so it's actually "Tell me (you) where I will go/Tell me where to go" (andare is 'to go', camminare is 'to walk' :) ).

Smetterei di piangere - smettere is "to stop"

"Ti persi" - you translated it as "you're lost", but it's actually "I lost you" --> persi is the first person passato remoto for "perdere", so he's talking about losing someone (himself also) a long time ago.

Also, I was wondering if it was an artistic decision to translate the chorus as the future tense in English (because in Italian it is all conditional), or if you were unsure of the meaning.

Besides that it's a nice translation! Good job.

Thanks for your feedback, vincer.

That double negative also sounded weird, but for the time being I decided to translate it that way, wanting to adapt it whenever it was possible. Just did that ;)

I don't know why I thought 'dimenticare' (to forget) meant 'smettere' (to stop) in this text, perhaps I was absent minded when doing this translation and didn't pay attention to that. Also corrected.

Given the meaning of the lyrics and the music video, I think he is talking about himself in an early age. Which makes this song even more beautiful :)

I don't understand this Conditional tense in Italian, what does that mean? Something like 'I would run to save you / I would run to talk to you / etc'? I was unsure of the meaning, that's why I used it in the Future tense.

I'm glad that you liked it, it makes me see that my Italian is getting better!

Kind regards!

Exactly, so the conditional in Italian would be equal to the "I would" construction in English. It doesn't always translate that way into English 100% of the time, but I think it would be appropriate for the context since it's sort of a song he sings to his former self and past. Hope that makes sense!

OK. That makes more sense, talking about the meaning of the song and its music video. Corrected. Thanks for the help ;)

I reached this place for an unusual situation. Why would an Italian guy send this to a new (female) friend ? I received this link without much context and really liked the song so I check for the meaning of its lyrics... and trying to understand if it was meant to be taken in a certain way..anyway I was going to ask him directly, thought of finding the deeper artistic meaning of this song as well...Thx

The bacground to this song is Tiziano's first relationship and it speaks of the love of one man for another, yes he is gay, it is the first time he has used gender specific pronouns in his songs 'lui' = him, so is a new departure for him, I love the song there are still a few problems with tenses on the translation but pretty good overall

Thanks for the feedback.

I know Tiziano's background. When he came out, he instantly turned into one of the people I admire the most.

If you found any mistakes in this translation or in any other, please which would they be, for their author to correct it. I'm always eager to receive feedback ;)

I agree with you about admiring him it took courage to come out in Italy and maintain his career but when I saw him live in Bologna in 2012 it was amazing & the crowd ranged from ages 8 to 80!

Generally the song is written in the conditional tense 'I would...' hence vorrei= i would like, penserei= i would think and so on for every verb that ends 'rei'

'perderei la mano a farmi male se lo vuoi' this translates as 'I would lose my hand to feel hurt if you want' implying he has hurt his boyfriend which reading his latest interview seems to have been the case

'Correrei a fermare il tempo e insieme a lui le sue torture' this is better as 'I would run to stop time and together with him its torments' its a line that doesn't translate well into English, that's the best I can come up with at the moment

His songs, being so personal, are difficult to translate into English as the languages are structured so differently

Unfortunately Tiziano hasn't been to Brazil for a long long time (I actually believe he's never been here), which is too bad for his huge fanbase that can't go to Italy to watch him live. I hope I can do that someday, since he's one of my favorite artists.

I've corrected my translation according to what you suggested. Thanks for the help!

I agree, Tiziano is an extremely great songwriter, it's sometimes hard to understand what he means in his songs. And that's what makes them so perfect :)
