I Loved a Girl

Macedonian

Si zaĺubiv edno mome (Си заљубив едно моме)

Submitter's comments:

This version centres around a girl (mome) but female singers have released versions centred around a boy (momce), wherein the grammatical genders are reversed, so slightly different lyrics may also be encountered. It is also not unusual for traditional folk songs to be reworked or modified by more modern singers, even those from different countries, so several versions of these lyrics may be encountered.

Si zaljubiv edno mome
od malečko do golemo,
dojde vreme da go zemam, of aman, aman,
padna mome, se razbole.

Jas otidov da ja vidam,
mi pobara ponadica,
srede zima belo grozje, of aman, aman,
srede leto - žolta dunja.

Jas otidov vo čaršija,
da pobaram ponadica,
srede zima belo grozje, of aman, aman,
srede leto - žolta dunja.

Ko se vrativ od čaršija,
sretnav mome na nosilka,
Belo lice potemneto
of aman,aman
Crni oči zatvoreni.
Dvesto davam - spuštete ja, of aman, aman,
Tristo davam - da ja vidam.

I Loved a Girl

I loved a girl,
From young to grown
The time came to marry her, oh, dear!
Oh, dear!
The girl fell ill.

I went to see her,
She asked for a present,
In midwinter white grapes, oh dear!
In midsummer – a yellow quince.

I went to the market,
To look for a gift
In midwinter white grapes, oh dear!
In midsummer – a yellow quince.

When I came back from the market,
I met her on a stretcher,
Her white face darkened,
Her black eyes closed.
I give two hundred - put her down, oh dear!
I give three hundred - to see her.
