Longing (Söknuður)

English translation

Longing

I am not even half the man I should be
and by myself I cannot hope to change
But had I you by me then I would gladly
be so much better than today

There is a time for every man for dying
after a bright day’s sunshine comes the night
I understand, but have to say still
that summer leaves us far too fast

We would sing and walk around
forget all things in flowering
In dusk we talked about the stars
Went together hand in hand
quietly down to the beach
found a place, to unite
our souls.

Long lost is the summer and the sunshine
in my soul a crippling grimness comes
In youth the snow and winter ice shines brightly
now I'm alone on a winter night

There is a time for every man for dying
after a bright day’s sunshine comes the night
I understand, but have to say still
that summer leaves us far too fast

I’m looking through my window out
to see if you come through the gate
I always think that there you are
I’m gazing out unto the reefs
I try to see you everywhere
then truth is near, it rushes here
and pierces me

Author's comments:

The translation is not exact since I aimed for a hopefully singable translation, where some of the poetic quality remains.
