Under the Mangroves

[Pedro]:

Love, that forbidden fruit
Is thus still unknown to you?
Ah! Maybe that's it,
Pretty little bud of April?

[Honorine]:
No! I've never seen it,
Never seen or known it,
But my ingenuous heart
Wants to make up, you see,
For all the lost time!

[Pedro]:
Ah! For loving, there's nothing like
The tall mangroves,
Dear little thing!

[Honorine]:
Ah! If the mangroves,
Make you fidget so much
I really want to try. . .

{Refrain}:
[Pedro]:
Ah! Come under the ma. . .

[Honorine]:
I'm coming from this step*,
But I'll go there step by step!

[Pedro]:
Ah! Do you want to follow me?. . .

[Honorine]:
I'm following you, not stubborn,
Under the tall mangro. . .

[Pedro]
Come unflinchingly,
Let's go chirp
Under the mangroves

[Honorine]:
Ah yes! Under the mama mama
Under the ma, the gro,
Under the mangroves. . .

[Pedro]:
Ah! I want you under the ma,
I want you under the gro,
The pink mangroves. . .

[Honorine][Pedro]:
Let's love each other under the ma,
Take me under the gro,
Let's love each other under the sink!**. . .

{End of refrain}

[Pedro]:
Ah! Your heart still seems to me
To hesitate, dear treasure,
But I want to dare
For a little, very little kiss!

[Honorine]:
A dizzy spell dazzled me,
A kiss, that's exquisite!
But as soon as he's taken it
I'll be for him
An object of contempt!

[Pedro]:
No, contempt, I pray you
Isn't in my price,
Because I'm caught, cutie!

[Honorine]:
Ah! My heart is at bay,
You can take, O my king,
My body deep in the woods. . .

{Refrain}

If I understand well
You want me, my pet,
Under the tall ma. . .
You come!. . .

{Refrain}

**"l'evier"=sink. I think this is a pun I don't get.
Welcome to the pun of 1934:
" Aimons-nous sous les palé,
Prends-moi sous les lé tu, (laitue=lettuce)
Aimons-nous sous l’é vier !…" (lévier=sink)

" Sous les grands palé…
Tu viens !…" (palé, tu viens = palétuviers)

" Tu peux prendre ô mon roi,
Mon corps au fond des bois"
which is a pun about the famous french sentence of Alfred De Vigny
"…J'aime le son du Cor, le soir, au fond des bois"

"Ah! mon coeur est aux abois,
.
.
Si je comprends bien
Tu me veux mon chien" (abois->chien)

Thanks! I'm obviously not French enough for these puns. :(

I'm not sur a lot of young French can understand all the pun... it's a "chanson légère et coquine", not a serious one.

Whatever, thanks again, it's not the first song you translate for me So... thanks thanks thanks. ;-)

"Je viens de ce pas" = I'm coming right now.
And "un baiser" is here definitely a kiss. Rap was not yet invented then.
