Mathieu Boogaerts - Une bonne nouvelle (English translation)

English translation

A good piece of news

Good news, good vegetal news
A postcard, a postcard from the country
Look at this sky, it's so bueautiful
this postcard from Michel
There's a word for you, for me, for us
Words about cabbages, cuckoos everywhere

Good news, good morning news
Such good news, that lifts my spirits
A christmas present with a pair of wings
for two poeple, Isabelle
Good news for you, for me, for us
Owls, wheatervanes, cuckoos are so nice

Anyway that's the way it goes,
avoiding to think of it.
Should somewhere in France
Should somewhere the chance
come across that chance,
would you like, like me
grab it for once?

A spark, a sparkling in your eyes
No matter which one, I want to know what you want
Show me how the sky is better
under Mathieu's sun
How the sky is better for you, for me, for us
Just some blue, nothing left of the rest
Oh, wishes all of a sudden, loves me, loves me not1

Anyway that's the way it goes,
avoiding to think of it.
Should somewhere in France
Should somewhere the chance
come across that chance,
would you like, like me
grab it for once?

  • 1. the French variant of daffodil plucking goes "il/elle m'aime un peu, beaucoup, passionnément, à la folie, pas du tout" (he/she loves me a bit, a lot, passionately, madly, not at all)

Author's comments:

Some people find his poetry charming, I find that kind of phoney kid talk rather annoying, and a pain to translate, besides... The chorus barely makes sense in French to begin with, and I suspect my translation just made it worse.
